I work for a casino which uses over 150 decks of cards per day. I would like to encourage them to begin shipping the used cards to our soldiers overseas.

I'm wondering if:
1) Some percentage of the cost of the cards would be tax deductible
2) The shipping costs will be tax deductible
3) There are any other positive or negative legal or tax rammifcations I should know about before making my proposal

Pass your donations through the USO, Army Relief Society, Air Force Aid Society, Navy Cares, etc. They're all registered charities and will see that your donations are put to good use where most needed.

As long as the cards are donated to a recognized charitable organization (a 501 (c) (3)) the donation would be tax deductible. I doubt though that it would amount to much. Wouldn't there be some better way that a casino could make a donation instead of used cards????

The only way to make this a tax deduction for the casino is if there is a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization involved. The casino could become one for this activity or involve some organization that already has that status.

Decks of cards are already an "ordinary" and "necessary" expense for a casino so they already receive a deduction when they buy them.

As such, there would be no tax benefit to donating them but they could do it for good PR.

What is the GARAGE SALE price for used playing cards anyway? Twenty five cents a deck or less?

Why in the heck would the casino not do this out of support of the troops and to hell with a deduction if it came downn to getting one or not getting one?
