Sometimes I crank it, and 3 min. later, it cuts off. It doesn't always freeze.

vile is incorrect, if frost is appearing it means you have plenty of charge, a low charge situation would mean you get no cold air,and the system couldn't produce frost.what it is, is this: theres a sensor switch on the low side of your a/c system, and what its responsible for is cycling the a/c clutch on and off. ( if it stayed on all the time, you would burn out the compressor ) that sensor is getting ready to go. it should be around 25 bucks for the part but you'll probaly have to take it to an a/c shop to have the system purged so that sensor can be replaced, then refill the a/c charge

In the evaporator there is a special sensor that is supposed to keep the system from freezing up. With a cycling clutch system there are two switch's. One runs the freon pump on and off, the other is override to prevent what your experiencing. However as previously stated, it can still be cause by low freon as well.

There can also be debris in the orifice screen, and it's possible for the dryer to be bad.
If it's frosting up on the evaporator, it's probably OK on freon charge. I would look at the switching.
Caution, only a certified tech should work on it.
I was, but am retired now. 45 years is enough for me.

I think you will find the cycling switch is bad and holding the compressor on full time.

My guess is the evaporator sensor. It's either not in properly, or it's malfunctioning. Take it to you're Dodge dealer and they will drive it with the Diagnostic Drivability Box (D.R.B.) in the A.C. screen and tell you what it is causing the problem. Low refrigerant will NOT cause the evap. to freeze up.

If not low a Freon than check the fan & condenser & evapator to see if it's clean as that can cause it to freeze up

system is low on R-134A refrigerant.
This is always indicated by frost on the low side (larger tubing) of the a/c system.
Have a shop charge it up and add dye to the system to find any leaks later on.
(this question was too easy, lol)
