Typically your ISP will provide you with anti-virus programs. Anti-Spyware is different and I have used Lava Soft Ad-Aware for years with no problems. You can use the link below to check it out. Click on the free one. You can also go to download.com and type in "ad-aware" in the search box an read user reviews, and can also download it from there.

You can get several great programs to protect your computer against viruses and spyware. The following programs are all free, up-to-date, and secure.

Anti-Virus:
AVG Free http://free.grisoft.com/doc/downloads-products/us/frt/0?prd=aff

Anti-Spyware:
Ad-Aware SE Personal http://download.lavasoft.com/personal/aawsepersonal.exe

Spybot Search and Destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Firewall:
If you have Windows XP, the built in firewall should be sufficient.
