My friend just enlisted in the army. Before he leaves, I'd like to buy him a nice knife. Will he be able to bring it in?

Definitely not during the training phases. After that any non-issue kit is at the discretion of a soldiers commander. General purpose Knives are generally accepted. However... 1. I can pretty much guarantee you will NEVER need a knife like that. 2. If you take it you'll find yourself so deep in 'banter' that you'll contemplate falling on it. Do yourself a favour and leave it somewhere safe- you'll be much better off.

Hey , hang onto the knife until he finishes basic and AIT. The drill sergeants will confiscate all knives of any sort until after these schools. Some places they will not have the knife returned.
After training he may still be required to keep it in the arms room unless he is using it.

No weapons allowed period while living in barracks, a knife with a blade longer than 2.5" is a weapon.

The details are in AR 612-201under prohibited items.

NO, ABSOLUTELY NOT! Recruit Trainees arent allowed Privately Owned Weapons, edged or otherwise, in fact he could get in a world of trouble for having a Blade that isnt issue during Training.

Not in Basic...once he finishes basic and gets a unit, he can then have it. Until then, its contraband.
I suggest you give it as a "graduation" present after basic. He will feel like he earned the gift. Even if i'm wrong and things have changed from 8 years ago, things can get stolen while in basic, and I wouldn't want to have it on me.
There is one gift he will probally want though...someone who will actually write him letters. The guys that get alot of mail feel important and popular
