Question regarding RF ID...can there be reliably short distance RF ID?

Hi this question is for technology guys. i am working on a project, I was curious if there are any RF ids which work well with short distances say 10-20 but would stop working if there is longer distance?
Also is there is a way I can increase and decrease the range in a single chip?

You can decrease the distance by putting it in an aluminum foil packet.
