I'm 17, never had a job, and I've been thinking about getting one this year. Any suggestions?

It depends. Let me just present a couple questions...

Are you planning on going to college, and if so, have you decided on a major? If so, it would be ideal to find a job related to that major. For example, if you eventually want to go into the medical field, consider getting a gig at a hospital, even if the job title isn't glamorous.

What are your strengths and weaknesses? Try to find something that complements your strengths. Like, if you don't like dealing with a lot of people, or tend to keep to yourself, consider a position like dishwasher. Yeah, I know, dishwashing isn't glamorous, but you get the idea.

If you have a car & a license your world is open & you can go based on your interests and skills. If you're walking to work, then you'll have a narrower scope based on where you can get to. If Mom or Dad is taking you...then ask them how far and when they'd be willing to drive.

After you take that into account, look around & see what fits the bill.

Fast food is always an option for a first job, as is retail. My son has two jobs ("first jobs" if you will), one is at a coffee shop & the other is at a video rental store. He loves them both. His friend works for a movie theater & loves it.

I'd love working for a bookstore (especially if I got a discount). Walmart, Costco & Sams all pay well.

Think about what you are good at doing today, what you want to be doing in the future. Think about every job you take as a step on the way to your future. You will enjoy the first jobs more if you look at them as just stepping stones to the best job you have ever had. If you are techy look for people who aren't-REALTORS or other sales people may need help getting their contacts into a database. Ask the homeowners association about part time times what are people talking about needing lawn mowing? pool cleaning? gutters? whatever they are great sources of information. Hard work and dependability are your badge of honor and your guarantee that people will remember you when they think about something bigger. Do every job any job as well as it can be done no matter what and watch them think of you for better things. Honesty, integrity, hard work! These things are becoming rare, let them be your badge of honor and you will have good jobs for the rest of your life! It matters. Good luck!
