There are many Family History libraries all over the US. Many are in Ward buildings/Stake Centers. You do not have to be a Mormon to do research on your family. In fact, I heard that most people doing research are not LDS.

They have a really big one in Salt Lake City. I don't remember about the Oakland Temple since I haven't lived there for over 30 years. "My local one is at the Carlsbad Stake Center."

Check on-line for the nearest "Family History" location. Happy hunting!

Don't trust a lot of the sites online. I couldn't find you a link.

Go tot he Temple and ask the representatives there about it. They will help you.

Be ready to share your own ancestry with them.

They collect it because they baptize people posthumously. They make your ancestors Mormon. If you don't care, it's a great resource for people looking for their ancestry.

If you do, they probably have already done so through getting the information some other way.

They can direct you to resources held by them even if you aren't Mormon.

I live in Oakland, the other answerer asked if you are Mormon bc there is a big Mormon Temple here. I think they do family genealogies for Mormon families, I don't know about non-Mormon families
