You are partially correct one of the meaning of Jihad is a personal struggle in devotion to Islam especially involving spiritual discipline..
The other meanings are a holy war waged on behalf of Islam as a religious duty and a crusade for a principle or belief ...
What is false about the terrorists use of the word jihad? Nothing as they are using one meaning and you are using another..

particular, it somewhat is right. Jihad potential "attempt."
