we have a fenched yard, a BIG doghouse, tons of toys, cool grass, and a cold porch, and a sunsetter, is it okay for my 6 1/2 month old golden retriever puppy to live outside? i want her to be inside more than anything but my dad and grandparents say no. my mom agrees, and so does my brother. :[

Dogs have lived outside while the people live inside for centuries.
It's great that your dog has a nice backyard to live in. What's just as important is that he has lots of interaction with his pack. If you can't spend plenty of time with him (every day), then no, it's probably not a good idea. I think some outdoor dogs have a better deal than some indoor dogs because they're able to spend more time with their people.
So, if you can play with him, if you can take your homework outside, if you can take him for walks, if you can take him on family adventures, I think he'd have a great life, even living outside.

It sounds like you have everything she needs, but honestly I would just rather not own a dog then to own one and leave it outside. Dogs are pack animals and they consider the people in their household as their pack and therefore want to be near them all the time. Leaving her outside will still be upsetting to her even though it’s a nice yard. But, if you plan on spending a lot of time with her and giving her a lot of attention even though she is an outside dog I’m sure it will be easier for her; maybe get another dog so she has a friend. Everyone has their different opinions on inside/outside dogs but as long as she is being taken care of and not being ignored I’m sure she’ll be alright. Maybe your family will let you bring her into the house a couple times of day as long as she is in your bedroom and supervised. Good luck.

The pup will be fine under the conditions you stated. Just keep plenty of fresh water available. And for the nuts that think Golden Retrievers are house dogs here is a lesson. Golden Retrievers are sporting dogs used for hunting. They need room to run and play as they are High energy dogs.

It's a wrong idea. The dog will never fully become a "member of the family" this way. The fact that the doghouse is BIG and there's plenty of grass doesn't make the situation any better for a young puppie
Why your folks object to the idea of a "family" dog?

Dogs can live outside happily with the right conditions. Make sure you interact with your dog daily, a fenced yard doesn't mean it doesn't need walks. Be sure to have a safe place for it to stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
It's okay.

Depends on where you live. I don't think any dog should be outside if it's above 90, and especially not a long haired breed puppy. Maybe compromise by only having her in during the day? Then only during the night during the winter?

I personally don't believe in dogs living outside. They are members of the family. A social breed like a Golden will be very lonely and may develop behavior problems. Who cares how nice it is outside--if you're by yourself it is not fun. Keep her indoors where she belongs. Otherwise, what's the point in having a dog if they can't share their lives with you?

Golden's are not outside dogs. They need to be with their family. To put the pup outside all the time is not a good idea. If you want to put it outside for an hour or 2 is one thing but not all day. You will have one unhappy golden on your hands.

Sorry, I agree with them, that it won't hurt. I have a 7 yr old Golden and he stays outside most of the time.
He sleeps in the sun in the morning, and moves to the shade when it gets hot.
When it is real cold, he prefers to sleep outside, rather than in the house, with the heat on high.
However, he does not like to be outside in the rain.

Dogs are pack animals when you bring a dog to your home YOu become the pack, dogs are miserable when they are alone, not to mention the risks of having an outside dog, kids tormenting it, ppl shooting at it, ppl that want to poison it etc, fly bites in summer, attacked by other animals.
No dog should have to live outside.
