What would the formula be if I wanted to Excel to format a cell only if it contained something?

Also, will VLOOKUP carry over conditional formatting?

Conditional formatting is not created by using a formula in the cell.

Go to the Format Menu -> Conditional Formatting...

Then fill in all the conditions and formatting, and keep clicking add until you have all the conditions.

Click OK.

Yes, Vlookup will not change the conditional formatting, just remember that the value is what is coming from the lookup table.
