This answer will probably get me fried , but Hopefully we are all adults here, and looking for the truth. The truth will be shocking to most of you.

The steeple on the top of chruches are a phallus symbol adopted from the pagan fertility cults. The masonic symbol that became the Washington Monument is also a type of this ancient religious idol.

Early churches had them because they believed the taller the building, the closer to god they would be. It's now become just recognizable classic architecture.
