There are a couple things you could try. You can fill a spray bottle with water and squirt the cat whenever it tries to climb the curtains, or you could try placing moth balls around the area. Cats absolutely hate the smell of moth balls, so you can use this idea to keep it out of your plants as well.

Moth balls are toxic, so if you have kids I wouldn't recommend putting them on the floor. The link below will give you a few more (non-toxic) ideas. It also says there's a certain flower that was created to repel cats away from certain areas, I'll link to that as well.

Kittens are so naughty! Eventually they calm down into balls of fur that sleep all day, following sun spots across the floor. (I swear, I can tell what time it is by where the cat is on the floor!) There is hope, but to get through the delinquent stage - a water
Spray bottle is the best deterant. Cats hate water, and it startles them without freaking them out. Never SHOUT! You don't want your cat to become afraid of loud voices and grow up to hide behind the couch all the time The water bottle works! They quickly associate "Climb Curtain/get wet... don't like wet/won't climb curtain!"

Good Luck! (And until kitty learn to behave, throw up some inexpensive curtains!)

This is usually a kitten thing - full grown cats rarely attempt it. I don't believe in declawing, so I choose fabrics and materials with a tight weave that are not conduicive to climbing. I also trim my cat's claws and he has a scratching post. Some cats like high places, so providing a cat tower may also help. You can also try Soft Paws, which are covers for cat claws - with these on, the cat would have a hard time getting a grip on the curtains.

Buy a cat tree. Get a spray water bottle and let it have a good stream right in the face.
