Seriously, Religion was a powerful way to bind the nation together. don't forget people did anything for their religion. I am surprised at the language of Bible. Unlike other Holy books in the world, the language is very harsh and written in anger and it creates fear.
The society at that time must have been evil that someone had to thought of writing a book like that to discipline people.
After Jesus was gone, hell broke through.

Nah not acid it was all that wine they drank coupled with the heat in that area of the world dehydration made them hallucinate.
