Alcohol I think is too irritating. I buy Oti-Clens from the vet and use that on my goldens.

Don't use any liquids in a dogs ear other than rubbing alcohol. Anything liquid can give a dog an ear infection but alcohol evaporates too quickly and is safe to use. Just put some on a cotton ball and clean as much of the ear as you can. The ear does not need to be cleaned any deeper than you can get a cotton ball.

Don't use alcohol, that's too abrasive. I woudl go to a pet store, or vet and ask for a ear cleaning solution for dogs. Basically, they have a nozzle, you squeeze a certain amount into the ear (dog may get irritated so must hold them still), and gently massage the ear. You will hear the liquid squelching around. Finally, you can carefully clean the ear wax out with a cotton ball, or cotton bud (be careful not to poke too deep with it if you use cotton buds). The ear wax should be brownish reddish in colour. You may haev to do it several times at first to really clean out the residue, but shoudl be pretty clean if you do this regularly.

It is important to clean the ears of floppy eared dogs more often.

Mix equal parts witch hazel and white vinegar.Put in a squeeze bottle,or a bottle with a dropper.Fill the dog's ear canal, massage, and get out of the way, because the dog will shake it's head! Wipe with a cotton ball, and get in the creases with a Q-tip ( just don't go down too far,) If your dog has a lot of wax build up,you can put peroxide in the ear to soften it,and then wipe it out.
I use a cleaner from my vet called Vetsolutions. It smells great and really does the job,but the homemade ones are good, too.

I wouldn't recommend alcohol, it can be very caustic to the tissues in the ear. Most pet stores will sell ear cleaners that are a lot safer. And cotton balls work very well. You can pour the ear cleaner right into your dog's ear and then wipe it back out.

I would recommend doing it outside because most Bassets love to shake after you're done!

Hope this Helps! = )

Try peroxide instead of alcohol. you can use a q-tip to reach the hard to get to places, just be careful just like when you clean your own ears. The peroxide won't cause any burning or irritation, and a little bit goes a long way.

You can get ear cleaning solutions fairly inexpensively either from your vet or local and on-line supply stores. The are a saline based solution and are the best to use. If ear infections are a concern check this website:

I have cockers and have used this solution, it really does work well!

I have floppy eared dogs and My vet recommended whitch hazel. My dog can not stand any ear cleaner that has an alcohol smell or base but doesnt mind the witch hazel.

I was told by the vet to use mineral oil on cotton gauze or cotton balls. They actually like the taste of the oil, so watch the used cotton so they don't eat them. (the oil is located in the laxative aisle, as it is also used for that) It makes their ears look funny because the fur gets all wet looking from the oil but it is harmless.
