My father deployed to Germany many years ago. We were able to get the family dog over there after he completed quarantine. He came home with us again three years later.
BTW: Germany has some excellent local breeds you could buy as well.

Yes, provided the host country has no restrictions. I suspect that most countries will have a quarantine time (3-6 weeks or so). Like others have mentioned, certain breeds are likely to be restricted, but as long as you pick something with a genial reputation, you should be ok. Check with your air carrier to see what their rules are on flying pets. I had a friend who had to leave her dog behind with a friend because the airline wouldn't fly a pet in extremely hot weather -- and she was going to Hawai'i in late Spring.

You will be able to bring a dog to Germany.I was stationed in Germany with my husband for 10 1/2 yrs.I personally didn't have a dog.But i had good friends currently still in Germany bringing a Doberman to Germany. As long as the dog has all the required shots it should be no problem.once you in Germany they have Veterinarians on post and i believe as long as you live on post that dog has to be registered.you also will be able to bring your dog back to the US.once you in Germany or maybe you be able to get more information of the website of your new Dutystation it will inform you of the dog owner rules in Germany. As long as you bring in no Fightingdog like Bullterrier,Rottweiler etc. you should have no problems.Hope i was to some help.Have fun in Germany.

ziggy hs got you covered ont his one minus one BIG thing. The Army wll not pay to ship your animal (unless things have changed very, very recently) The cost of the dog's flight will come out of YOUR pocket as well as the expenses for quarantine. We did 1 tour to Germany with our cat and never again. It was incredibly expensive. We ended up giving the cat to a friend when we left Germany because we didn't have the money to fly him back to the US.

certain breeds you cant have like a pit bull or a Rottweiler or any breed that is considered dangerous the army has a list of types of dogs you can own and dogs you cant own your dog has to have all its shots and have a chip along with an animal passport it also has to spend 6 weeks in cornitine before you fly with your animal im not sure how that process works but i do know it is to insure that your animal is not going to bring any strange bacteria or dieses with it to another country but you can take a dog it is wise to get one now if you want one
it can get costly but they have animal insuence its 20$ a month im not sure how the military works when it comes to animals i think every post has a vet pecause of the military police dogs but im not sure how all that works out
Germany will not sell pets to Americans because there has been too many cases of abandoned animals here and the Germans are tired of it plus animal laws here do not euthanize animals in shelters so the animals just pile up if you do want to get a dog while in Germany you ll be paying 3000 bucks for a medium dog and about 500 for a small dog which is very expensive
i am stationed in Germany right now i decided against a pet plus you have to ask yourself do you really want a dog and will you plan to keep it with you it is expensive to have to pay for shots and go through the works of flying with it and if you and your family doesnt have good patients and love for an animal then getting a dog right now may not be for you
i am an army wife i wanted a dog for the same reasons i got a fish instead and i tend to buy werid things like stuffed anmimals and pillows but im doing fine without a dog plus your wife may not want to take care of a dog on her own dogs as well as any pet require alot of work shell have to walk him feed him and the works and that can get aggraviting especially if she works or she plans on seeing some castles here in germany and if you want to travel all over europe like we want to do youll have to bring the dog with

Okay, yes you can buy a dog here and ship it to Germany. In fact it will be easier to do this because German Tierheims (Shelters) will NOT let American adopt a dog (they will cats but not dogs). To many Americans PCS out of Germany and just abandon their animals.
You are allowed 2 animals to ship. And you will not be able to ship during the months of June/July/and sometimes August depending on where you will be shipping from because of the heat index.
When going through customs, you must present proof of rabies vaccination. The vaccination must have occurred at least 30 days and at the most 12 months before entry into Germany. Repeat vaccinations that occurred a maximum of 12 months after the previous rabies vaccination and a maximum of 12 months before entry are also permissible. The vaccination certification must be submitted in German or with an officially approved German translation. The local post vet should be able to help you with this one.
In Germany there is an import ban for dogs classified as dangerous ("Fighting dogs"). According to this law, specific dog breeds as well as dogs crossbred among those breeds or dogs of those breeds crossbred with other dogs may not be transported to Germany from any country outside of the European Union (EU) or from another member state.
These dog breeds are:
- Pit bull Terrier,
- American Staffordshire-Terrier,
- Staffordshire bull terrier as well as
- Bull terrier
Check out this for more info:
http://www.hqusareur.army.mil/opm/Importing%20animals.htm
http://www.germany.info/relaunch/info/consular_services/customs/dogs.html
When you come back to the states, the same rules apply with the shot record and when to be able to ship them.
You will love Germany. My girls and I did and we would go back tomorrow if we could.
BTW, germans think very highly of their animals. Don't be surpised if you go into a restaurant and see dogs in there under the tables and such. And also see them in grocery stores and other department stores. We use to bring our "little Hot dog dog" all the time with us out to eat. They take their animals with them on alot of walks, on vacations, shopping, etc.,. And most german dogs are inside animals, you will not see alot of Germans who leave their dogs outside for a long period of time. Even a short period of time unless they are out there with them.
Good luck and enjoy Germany

Hi
I think you're being a bit selfish there, think about the dog it's not just about what you want, the dog will have to follow you around and then there's kennels and quarantine you'll have to leave it for long periods of time, on the whole not a good idea and certainly not good for the dog they get upset and frightened also.

It depends on the host country. Some countries have a ban on what they call vicious animals, like pit bulls. Generally yes, you can bring pets with you when you PCS.

yes, it can be done, but there are lots of hurdles and the gov't will only reimburse a small portion of all expenses incurred. Additionally, some breeds are not allowed, or allowed in housing.
