Red allergies happen. It's not very common but there are those of us out there that have them.
When I have any red done on my body (and trust me I try to stay away from it) it takes forever to heal, is dry, super scabby, and itches for weeks. The skin around the area usually also gets red and swollen, but I've got an awesome Dr who will prescribe me with amoxicillian when I know I'm getting red work done.
Usually after I loose a little ink depending on how bad my reaction is. The best thing to do is
1. See your artist and let them know you had an ink reaction
2. Lotion lotion lotion. Try to keep it clean and moisturized.
3. See a doctor. They may give you something different to put on it which might not be the best for the tattoo, but hey at this point your most likely going to loose ink anyways, better to get it healed up, so your skin can rest before you decide to do any touch up work.

First off - Very cool that you have the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland! I have a full lower leg sleeve of an entire Alice in Wonderland Theme.
Back to your question: My tattoo artists have told me that some people reject the color red more than any other color and that it can also take longer to heal than other colors. If it is dry and tough, continue to put a fragrance and color free lotion on it. I would also recommend that you show it to your tattoo artist to ensure that it is not infected.

Get some Eucerin (unscented) Cream. It's super moisturizing and it'll keep the skin moister than anything out there. Also use mild soap in the shower, like unscented Dove. (My sister is a tattoo artist and we happen to have a dermatologist in the family.) If your pants have been rubbing it, that could be part of the problem, too. Put lotion on all day long, especially after you shower, swim, etc. A month isn't that long, you could have some healing left to do.

The red ink causes an allergic reaction in many people.
I myself do not have this problem. I have two tattoos with a lot of red ink and they healed fine.

i have a shooting star on my stomach. it took a while to heal.
use salt water and DO NOT pick at it. also don't let it get to wet or soak in water because this will make the healing process take forever and may cause the ink to fade.

Keep using medicated ointment on it, or moisturize it as much as you can.. and plan to have the red redone in a few years.. My rose tattoo is so faded and I never go out in the sun :(

Red ink give people the most problems as far as allergies are concerned. Perhaps that has something to do with it. Talk to your tattooist.

I have two tattoos and both times I was given A&D ointment to keep it moist, and I applied it constantly!
Also if you go out into the sun, make sure to put plenty of sunblock on it to keep it from drying out and to keep it from fading.
