I'll disagree with my fellow answerers and recommend you get Word and the latest version is 2007. It is easy to use but you can not customize the new ribbon menus as much as Word 2003.

OpenOffice does work, but it just looks like Word did about 10 years ago. It is free.

Older versions will work ok for creating documents, but you may not be able to read newer formats, created with 2007.

You could also try out http://www.openoffice.org , it reads and creates the same filetypes that Microsoft products create and use, but it's free! it doesn't have quite the bells and whistles (not as many preloaded banners and borders, etc.) but it gets the job done nicely for free!

Dont buy it at all: there is an entirely free program that is the lead competitor of Microsoft Office:

You can do anything from Open Office as you can from Microsoft Office, without paying a cent.

no it doesn't matter just, be sure to uninstall 2007 before installing something else. You can use http://www.openoffice.org also, thats free and I think it's pretty much the same thing as word, not entirely sure though, gl
