I'm trying to teach my dog down and he isn't listening. Hes a 4 month old Golden, I say down, grab his front legs, and gently pull them down, but when I do, he rolls over for a belly scratch what do I do? I want him to lay, not rollover.

Well you're lucky, I try to get my dog to roll over and he just lays down. Try urging him with a treat!

Read books by Ian Dunbar for good suggestions.

There are two good ways to teach down.
Lure:
1. Tell him to sit.
2. Take a tiny treat, show your pup, and slowly move the treat down and a little forward to lure the pup down.

Shape:
1. Go into the kitchen with the pup and close the door.
2. Ignore the pup, until he gets bored. He will sit.
3. Continue to wait until he lies down.
4. When he lies down, say down and give the treat. Don't worry if he gets up.
5. Repeat steps 2 -4 for about 10 min. then stop
6. Repeat step 5, later in the day and on the next day, until the pup understands.

Tell him to sit. Take a treat and lower it to the floor between his front feet, directly below his nose. Tell him "down" and give him the treat as soon as his chest touches the ground. Don't give it to him if he rolls over. Praise him and repeat several times, 3-4 times a day. It's an easy command to teach and Goldens learn fast.

ok heres how you do it:
you have the dog sit first (teach him if he doesnt know already)
have a treat in your hand and let him see and smell it but dont give it to him.
slowly move the treat from up by his face in a diagonal to the ground in front of you. as yo do this keep saying "down"
he will reach for it as you lower it and bring it closer to you and end up in laying down. when he is give him the treat and say GOOD BOY!!!
keep doing this with him it will take some practice.

Make sure that your dog knows the sit command first this s the most important. Try putting food on the ground or in your hand and coax him down if he goes than reward him. Golden's are very smart I have one and they learn fast, but they are also notorious for loving belly rubs LOL. Good Luck and give it time he'll get it.

Try taking a small treat - show him the treat. Get his attention - say down as you are lowering the treat to the ground. When he is "down" praise him and give him the treat.
This was taught to me by the Humane Society in a Dog Obedience class.

Down is one of the hardest commands to teach. It is a very submissive position and most dogs don't like that.

Easiest way to teach down is to get a professional trainer to teach you how to do it. It is a great investment that will last a life time.

Have your dog sit. Put a treat on the ground and move it foreword as he tries to get it, he may go down. If that doesn't work, which it probably won't, do this.

Get his leash on and get treats. Have him sit. Put your finger right behind his shoulder blades and tell him down.Right after that give a little pop(downward) on his leash and push him into down with your hand behind his shoulder. Get him to go down fast while your teaching it so he will go down fast when he has learned it. As soon as he is down, praise him and give him a treat. Then give him a release command, like "free" and give him a little tug to get up. This way your dog will stay down until you tell him to get up. You don't need a stay command. As he figures it out, don't push him down, just give him a little pop after saying down. Praise him each time. After he knows what he is doing you can get rid of the pop in the leash and just tell him to go down. If he doesn't give him a few pops till he goes down. Don't praise him if you had to correct him, just tell him "free" and do it again.

Well i have a dog and i think a good way to teach him lie down is to teach him sit first than while he/she is sitting, get a treat put it by its nose and move it twords the floor and it should lie give the treat to him afterwards.
I HOPE THIS CAME IN HANDY.

ok, what i did with my dog is i took a treat and put it in my hand. Then I took my hand and put it down slowly while saying down. Soon, he started to go down with it. and i gave him a treat. A couple of days later, after practicing, he went down without a treat in my hand. Now, all i have to say is "down".

Hope that helps!
