When people immigrate to this country (let's not discuss legally or illegally) they begin (we hope) to assimilate into the American culture and therefore are motivated to learn the language so that they can obtain jobs, education and feel as if they belong. Accessibility to so much more is also a motivating factor. If you happen to be a 2nd or 3 rd generation American, then of course your ancestors first language will be lost or "watered down". It is not your fault that they chose to learn and teach you English. It is what I am sure has made you successful. You should not be made to feel guilty if you can't speak Spanish. If you want to pursue your family's language, take classes and learn it. Don't forget to use older family members as resources. Good luck!

I am an American. I speak English and plan on always doing so. I figure that is my native tongue and if other people come from other countries to live here they should learn the native language as well. My ancestors learned to speak English when they came from Germany.

Which native language do you speak? Arapaho? Sioux? Choktaw? Apache? There are many to choose from. I agree with your sentiments, though, we should learn the native languages of the country we are in. I am Australian and have some knowledge of two of our 200+ native languages and a smattering of two or three others. We should all do the same.

no habla espanol

My parents didn't speak any language but English and had no reason to learn another one. Why would it be their fault that I didn't choose to learn Spanish, or any other language for that matter?
