A couple of years ago, I used one of those title-pawn dealers to get some extra cash when I was in a crunch. Eventually I had to file for bankruptcy, but that fell through. Now it is time to renew my tag and I'm afraid that when I show up to renew it that the title-pawn people will have reported my car as stolen since I never paid them back in full. This all happened in GA, and I am on assignment out of state. GA is still my state of residence, though. I did do a Carfax and another carcheck service, and neither one showed that my car had been reported as stolen, but I know they are not 100% reliable.

Thanks for all the answers so far. They really put my mind at ease. Since I sank so badly in the hole, I've been working with my credtors to pay back what I owe. I've sworn never to go into debt again (outside of what I am currenlty paying off). It has been a real eye-opener, and I have learned a lot of painful lessons.

This debt to the title-pawn is overwhelming, because I know the interest that has accrued is astronomical. I need to buckle up and call them to find out how bad it is and what I can to to start paying them back.

Since the car is registered to you the stolen report would dry up pretty quick. Reporting the car stolen would backfire as they would end up being charged for making a false police report.

So you defaulted on the loan and you think they reported it stolen? No, there might be a pickup out on it with the police but not as a stolen. More likely embezzled...anyway, if they want to repossess it, they can. It's not yours until you make the last payment. Or in your case, they are the lienholder and they can certainly take the car...K ;o)

They put a lien on it so if you try to sell it they get paid first.
They would not report it stolen. So go ahead and get your tag and pay off the debt.

Technically, "your" car IS stolen...by you! Do you have the title? No.

Those "title-pawn" folks don't usually go to the authorities, though, they just locate the vehicle (by trading info with each other nationally), then coming to get their car back. They have been known to take any money owed them not out of your wallet but out of your HIDE!

Be very, very cautious!

Why not, they can't repo a stolen car!
