Regulated by the terms of the Lateran Treaty of 1929, Vatican citizenship is given to all persons and their families whose offices require that they live in the territory. It is ended when their office or residence is terminated.

As of December 31st 2005, there were 557 persons having Vatican citizenship; they were 58 Cardinals, 293 of the Clergy having status as members of the Pontifical Representations, 62 other members of the Clergy, 101 members of the Pontifical Swiss Guard and 43 other lay persons.

So unless you work for or live in the Vatican, it is extremely unlikely that you could acquire Vatican citizenship.

No you have to be a member of the Roman Catholic faith. The Vatican issues its own passports to certain Vatican officials born in foreign countries who need to be permanently based at the Vatican or in other Vatican offices.

Passport Note
There are no formalities required to enter the Vatican City, but entry will always be via Rome, and Italian regulations must therefore be complied with (see Passport/Visa in the Italy section).
There is free access only to certain areas of the Vatican City; these include St Peter's Church, St Peter's Square, the Vatican Museum and the Vatican Gardens. Special permission is required to visit areas other than those mentioned.
Passport and Visa Information
See Italy section for Italian embassy and consulate addresses.

Passports are only issued to citizens of that nation. The only citizens of the Vatican are the College of Cardinals and the Pope.
