I will be a freshman next year, and I really enjoy playing volleyball. I am going to try out for the team, and I am concerned about the uniform. I am overweight, and the short shorts and tight shirts are making me very uncomfortable. What sort of undergarment do I have to wear with the shorts? Can I ask the coach if I can wear Leggings or something under the shorts?
During practice, I've seen that people wear t-shirts, and that will be fine for me. But, during games, what shirts do we wear? Is there anything I could do to make myself less self-conscious, any sort of tweaking the uniform that could help me?
Please don't comment on anything like "lose weight" I do realize that is an issue, and I am working on losing weight as best as I can.
Please help me, and thank you so much in advance!

i think that the people that say ur fat can suck their DICK. if ur a really good player, then the team wont be worrying about ur weight, more about..idk, maybe how you play. i no a girl who wears spandex shorts, and a tight shirt all the time, and she has big, thick thighs, and i have never heard anyone call her fat, or to lose weight, she is an amazing setter, and i personally play volleyball too, so i am not fat, but i no wat it is like..dont let anyone call you fat

I sadly know where you're coming from. Let me just say...if you are busy worrying about your appearance, you aren't going to be able to focus on your game. I know when I was in high school we had a larger girl on the team who wore a slightly modified uniform. Simply talk with your coach about ordering something in the same color but just not as tight. Do know that you will then stand out being in a different uniform, but I would feel a little more comfortable than in tight clothes.

Don't give up over something like this, work hard...and who knows, maybe soon you will look good enough to wear the other uniform and feel comfortable just like everyone else!

Well, for practices just wear loose T-shirts (Everybody does so you won't look out of place). For undergarments, wear thongs or G-strings for sure or some people chose to wear nothing at all and a sports bra. Always wear a sports bra. it is really gross when people practice in regular bras. Don't wear leggings. But, most volleyball teams (if they are any good), will wear knee high socks and knee pads which will cover up a good portion of your leg, so you don't need to worry about showing a lot of skin. And, volleyball is such good exercise and they do so much conditioning, that you will find yourself losing weight with hardly any effort becuase you will be having fun. Eventually, you will look amazing in that volleyball uniform!

there was an overweight girl on my team before. during practice she wore capris and a regular shirt. in my school during the game, we wear jerseys which aren't tight or anything like that. And i would say ask about the leggings, or to make it less noticeable, wear nude (like your skin color) tights. But make sure they're TIGHTS. because tights are a bit thicker than stockings. i know you can find tights at a dance shoe store for a reasonable price. I'm not sure where else... i guess just in any store possibly.

Don't stress over the uniform/weight thing too much though. As long as you're okay with your body and how you look, people won't talk about it, unless you start wearing really skin tight clothes. So just wear casual, loose fitting, but comfortablle clothes during practice and tights or leggings under your shorts during games. as long as you are okay with how you look, then you should be good.

good luck on losing weight! plus, volleyball is good exercise, so that shoudl help as well.

1] talk to the present coach - ask if you can wear bike shorts or leggings under bottoms, and sport bra with a T , or a cami under top. Volleyball uniforms are very similar to basketball uniforms - sleeveless tops, and 'long' shorts.
2] meanwhile, do aerobic exercise 6 days a week for 30 minutes - builds up stamina, and speeds fat loss
3] do 3 sets each daily of 10 reps of pushups, situps, obliques, and crunches - strengthens core, and improves flexibility.
4] add weightlifting in front of TV, listening to music, etc.
5] cut out all fried, fast, and junk food - even diet junk food.
No soda, chips, crackers, sweets - try it for a month - you'll make tremendous progress!
6] drink 1/2 gallon of water a day
7] take a quality multivitamin a day

Well my highschool used spandex shorts for uniforms so you can just get some a size bigger

my friend is overweight too but because she's such a good player, no one notices

volleyball isn't for people to stare at your butt, its for people to watch how good you do!!!

you can wear a tank top underneath your uniform shorts, it always helps me feel less self consious!!

remember, it's not how good you look but how good u do so dont' let this ruin your confidence and make you a worse player!!!

believe in your self and no one can tell you how bad or good you look!!!!

go for it and if people make fron of you then they're losers who need to get a life!!!

good luck

Volleyball is great exercise! Keep it up and you'll look good in that uniform in no time. In the meantime though, I would say, go ahead and where leggings under the shorts - check w/ coach for color requirements, and order the shirt a bit bigger. if its a tank, you could wear a cami underneath too. You'll be fine! Have a great year!

Ask the coach as anything you wear besides the team uniform will need to meet state athletic association standards. In Ohio, individuals and teams have been DQ'd from events due to not having matching uniforms.

im the same way, im not huge, but im not small, just i guess average, but still have some- anwyays, im self conscious about that too- so the best thing is to try to be as healthy as you can and learn that at the end of the day- you are who you are, why should you let anyone else make you feel awkward in your own skin, they are there for mostly the same reasons as you- becuase they love the game, so go with it, dont be held back by these thoughts- i was, now i just try to go out- youll feel so much better knowing that you just did what you love to do:) good luck!
