Many people are simpletons who can't think outside of the box. For them, EVERYONE HAS to belong to SOME religion, so they pinhole atheists into one as well.
It'll be a long time before people realize that atheism is not a system of belief, but simply one disbelief. At least, that's my understanding of atheism, being that I'm not one.

most people dont have the mental faculties to see that its simply a position on a question.
theyre stuck in medieval thoughts, simple ones. ones that go "if youre nto with us then youre against us"
people who cant wrap their heads around semi-complex ideas. all they see is red vs blue, rights vs wrong, black vs white, their side vs our side, republicans vs democrats, islam vs christianity.
most of them see atheism as a religion because thats the only way they can justify is as an enemy. by turning us into a competing religion, as if were trying to recruit for our side as if were going to war or something.
