I think that this is a very humane question and I don't think you guys should take it lightly.
What you do is freeze it so it falls asleep. The second the water boils you drop it in, and thats it. It will die more peacefully that way.

I saw a show once where they put a knife down the center of its head and cut the head in half. The chef claimed this was the least painful way to kill it. I never tried it though as boiling is the easiest way. Always make sure your lobster is alive until right before you cook it.

If it helps any, I read in a cooking magazine once that it's not the boiling water that kills the lobster, it's the fact that it's FRESH water. Lobsters are salt water creatures. Just like if you put a salt water fish in a fresh water tank it will die, if you drop lobsters into fresh water, boiling or not, they will die.
If you don't want to have to kill it, buy lobster tail at the store instead. It's already dead and it's just the tail. ...and, to be honest, I've never noticed a difference in taste.

It will die almost instantly if you drop it into boiling water (the "screaming" is not the lobster in pain, it's the steam generated inside the shell squealing out through the joints), but if you prefer to "dispatch it" first, simply put the point of a sharp, heavy knife on the gap between the back of its head and the fiirst segment of its abdomen and thrust down; that will sever its "brain" from the rest of it. Then throw it in the pot, or split it in half lengthwise and throw it on the grill!
Yum!

that is the least painless way to kill a lobster, they die instantly. You get the water boiling FIRST and then put the lobster in and keep it boiling for 15 mins.

I don't like to see the lobster suffer either. But that is the best way to cook a lobster.

Buy your lobster and keep it in the freezer for some hours. The cold makes it fall asleep, so when you do put it in the hot water, it just passes from sleep to death. Least painful method I know.

It's unclear if lobsters even feel pain.
If it makes you feel better just remember that is is very likely that the amount of neurons (of lack thereof) a lobster has means that they can't feel pain.
"In February 2005, a review of the literature by the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety tentatively concluded that "it is unlikely that [lobsters] can feel pain,"" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lobster

No. If the lobster is dead before boiling it in water, it is no good.

I read about this one device in a magazine, but i dont know where you can get it or if its even out yet. Instead of boiling the lobster, you put it on the thing and it electrocutes its it, its supposed to cause less pain. You'll have to search for it , because i dont know where to get it.
