Usually the Van is Dutch and the Von is German. Now, in colonial American, Germans were frequently called Dutch. The word Deutsch (pronouced Doytsch) sounded like Dutch to the ears of English speaking people.

Vandiver is the Americanized form of the Dutch Van Duiver, a habitational name for someone from Duiven in Gelderland near
Arnhem.

The name Vandiver is Dutch, but according to www.familysearch.org, the family members were also found in Ireland, Scotland, France, Italy, and Sweden. At www.houseofnames.com is a picture of the family coat-of-arms.

I think that your father is right. And probably the name was written in another way in former times.
