I don't know much about the army...but I assume they need something better than a swiss army knife, right?

Either way, I want a good knife for someone going in the army that can be engraved by the place. Anyone know of this?

Google SOG. They are a company that manufactures knives used by theNAVY SEALS, ARMY RANGERS, AIRFORCE P.J.s, and COAST GUARD RESCUE SWIMMERS. That is probably along the lines of what you are looking for.

If you want to get him a folding fighting knife, Benchmade would be a good choice. Gerber also makes some good folding knives.

Even better, you can contact my friend BJ Snow, Tipi Kinfeworks, and have him make a custom knife. BJ's knives are works of art, and are at the same time, highly utilitarian.

BJ is a great knifemaker, a darned good pistolsmith, and expert gripmaker, and an all around great guy. I am proud to call him Friend and Brother.

Below are links to some of BJ's knives and an article about him Guns Magazine. I didn't post a link to TiPi Knifeworks web site because my confuser kept timing out. If you contact BJ, let him know that I gave him a high recommendation, and let him know what you want to do with the knife.

Hey , hang onto the knife until he finishes basic and AIT. The drill sergeants will confiscate all knives of any sort until after these schools. Some places they will not have the knife returned. After training he may still be required to keep it in the arms room unless he is using it.

There are many brands out there. I have listed my top three picks. These are just in my opinion. (I have used and owned all of these)

CRKT: M21-14SF (designed by the military for special forces use)

BLACKHAWK: MOD CQD Mark I (With the exception of a serial number, the sterile, unmarked Mark I LE (Limited Edition) is the exact knife issued to many SEALs, the State Department's Mobile Security Division, and other members of the special ops community)

SOG: SEAL Team Elite SE-37 (Includes extended Tang for glass breaking and hammering applications)

In my opinion, they are all great knives.

One friend of mine (Airborne Ranger) swears by the CRKT. It has a great reputation as a company. They are durable knives and can stand all the tests that you put them through.

I personally use the Mark I everyday. In my field, it has all the tools that I require. I recommend this knife for anyone in the military or like profession.

The SOG is a great company as well. I prefer their fixed blade knives as compared to their folding knives. They have yet to make one that can't be broken. I have broken 2 different SOG folding knives. They do, however, make a great fixed blade knife.

Remember, in knives, just like guns, you get what you pay for. If you are willing to shell out a few bucks, get him something that he can use and can pass down someday. Make sure that you look at all the specs on the knife (i.e. quality of metal in blade, locking mechanism, hardware used to construct the handle, durability, warranty, past performance of company, blade type - tanto/gut hook/clip point/drop point/sheeps foot/ulu, dulling, etc...)

In reference to engraving. I know that CRKT and BLACKHAWK will do that for you on order. I don't know about SOG, but its worth asking. Any knife blade can be engraved or etched with acid.

PLEASE READ.....

Great input on the knife selection, just remember that if he recently joined the Army, please wait until he is finished with all the basic training BEFORE you send him a knife.

Getting a knife in boot camp will only get it taken away (even if only temporary).

just my two little copper things...
