@ND36: German sounds "harsh"?
What does that mean?
I heard it sounds like barking of a Dog for Americans...

@Acyla:
I think Angela Merkel is not good for Germany, she is good for the economy, but not for the People who work for the economy.
For example she is against a minimum wage of 8 €, and for example a german hair cutter gets 3,50 an hour...
And thats while the economy is booming...

I'm not American but Australian but I like your question enough to want to answer. *grins*
Germany is nice, only popped in and out but they were quite friendly.
The language is a bit difficult. Masculine, feminine and neutral. That's an overdose! <--- I speak Cantonese where we have 7 different tones so I suppose that's a little hypocritial of me, but in all honesty it's a different variation of difficulty.
I haven't looked that far into Angela Merkel but I find her rather strong in character. She's the kind of person who wouldn't be able to bully over easily. I wonder, as a German, what do you think of her?

I'm not familiar with Angela, but I have no problem with German people. I took German classes in high school and college, and I have been to Germany twice, and I love your culture. Good food, great mountains, people were friendly, very very clean (at least where I was staying). Overall I have a high opinion of Germans. Great Futball team!!!

I have no idea who Angela Merkel is.
I don't have a lot of well-founded opinions about Germans. I know that the Greens have a big following in Germany, and that they have generous of worker-protection laws (BTW, that minimum wage of 8€ = $10.94 and the Federal Minimum Wage here in the US was just raised to $7.50). So I suppose they're relatively liberal. I know I like German 'Goth' music, like Ramstien & Projekt - though I wouldn't be surprised to find I felt differently if I could understand the lyrics.
Yes, to a native English speaker German sounds 'harsh' (though not like a dog barking) - it's just the cadence, prevelence of consonants, and agglutive structure (I think that's the right term). Similarly, English sounds 'harsh' to Italians.

I love 'em, my great grampa and his wife came over in 1894 and and my other great grand parents came ove from Ireland before that, then of course on my fathers side we have the Native American Indian and I think more German but I didn't know him to well before he died so I can't find out much either.
Oh yeah I have all the old books that Great Grand Dad brought over with him, I can't read them though because they are in German. I also have his old library desk that they are all stored in. And the bedroom set he made for him and his wife.
Nice piece of work.

I see foreign visitors here all the time and I admit, I especially have a fondness for the German people overall. Even with the language barrier, they seem to have a lot in common with Americans.
From what little I know of Chancellor Merkel, she seems popular with the people and has already done a lot for the economy.

I like Germany. Happens my people came from there some hundreds of years ago, so maybe I have a slanted opinion.
However, from the international viewpoint Merkel seems pretty good. From what you say she sounds like a globalist. Since they uniformly increase the profits of the international corporations at the expense of the workers, the rest of what you say doesn't surprise me.
Education is a wonderful thing, though, and there is a backlash going on over here, at least at the moment. Good luck on yours.
Um, folks, Angela Merkel is the Chancellor of Germany. Think President. And at the moment the President of the EU as well, so to speak.
