I like Judo more as well.

The BJJ guys I fight emphasize that they take pride in fighting to submission. They hate the pin, and they do not believe that a properly executed throw would incapacitate them (which for the most part I’d have to agree).

Unfortunately much of the time BBJ fighters take things too far, and people get hurt. The “Tap Out Mother F&%*er” aspect of BJJ is real and prevalent. Many BBJ fighters are only focused on themselves, and gain self esteem by hurting other people.

I agree with you! Judo is MUCH better at the takedowns then BJJ! The UFC has made it popular because of Royce Gracies EARLY success.

As a matter of fact BJJ guys/gals have a hard time with Judo fighters! Just do some research you'll see.

As everyone SHOULD know Aikido has the most locks in it's arsenal! And Judo is very similiar to Aikido. SO yes, Judo is also better at submissions too!

MMA- The style gained a lot of great publicity in the cagefighting/mma world to the point that a large percentage of MMA fighters train in the art (Usually in a type of combination like BJJ and Muay Thai, or BJJ, Judo, and Karate for example). The popularity just moved on from there with it.
The Gracies- They did a lot to promote their style. They released videos depicting how standup arts fair with the style. A byproduct of this was the inaccurate generalization that the BJJ defeats all other styles (Which I would not say is the fault of the Gracies necessarily: They were simply proving that the art is one of the most unstoppable on the ground [Which on another note is a reason why a lot of people cross train in various fighting ranges, which is a very good thing]). A lot of people have given into the idea.

BJJ is a great ground fighting art, but a good practitoner from a lot of other styles could take a BJJ practitoner, just as a good BJJ practitioner could do the same. This includes Judo (Which can be very tough at times as well [And that toughness in training is one reason why BJJ is usually a good ground fighting style]).

Regardless: A lot of practitoners from either style are smart enough to learn both throwing and grappling techinuqes, to mix the two grappling styles into their own thing. Following up a good judo throw with a BJJ submission can usually make for a good combo.

I personally like both styles, and I have both in mind as styles to round out my fighting with the standup I know.

Most BJJ guys cross train in judo but their throws just aren't as good as a Judo guy at the same level. As for grappling BJJ works grappling as a primary focus as a result they are much better on the ground and that is because Judo's primary focus is throwing. Sure Judo covers chokes, arm bars etc but not nearly in the detail as BJJ.

The quality of Judo schools around sydney are quite poor, and all the schools that are out there are usualy only focused on olympic type judo, so very little if any submissions and mostly throws

BJJ has its takedowns, but where it excells is ground game. Its just amazing what a BJJ practitoner can do on the ground, and if your talking wrestling only i doubt there will be too many Judo guy who could take down BJJ guys

If they taught more traditional style Judo with more of the ground fighting side and not just the throwing side i think not only would it be way more popular but it would see alot more of its practitioners in MMA

I think it has to do with the popularity and success of BJJ practitioners in mma. You are right, Judo is similar to BJJ with the lock and chokes. There are just not that many pure judoka in mma ( Karo Parisyan, Hidehiko Yoshida, Pawel Nastula) compared to pure people who practice BJJ.

I think if a judoka had come into the UFC and beat everyone like Royce Gracie did, everyone who be wanting to learn Judo.
