I believe that it was John that said that man must "go out unto all nations". A real bible-person would know better than me though. Professing Christ to all people, is after all the only way to ensure that as many people as possible are saved from hell fire and eternal death and damnation.
It's not out of context, it's one of the real and honest - to -goodness beliefs of Christian faiths. Unlike the jews who have no such directive in the old testament, and typically will deny would-be converts from joining the fold three times to make sure that they are certain of their desire to convert.
Edit: Don't forget that children's song about faith!
"Hide it under a busshel NO! I'm gonna let it shine!"
Jesus has a parabel about keeping an candel hidden, the point of which being that one should let the world know that you are walking with christ.

Matt. 28:19, 20: "Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded you."
Mark 13:10: "Also, in all the nations the good news has to be preached first."
Matt. 24:14: "And this good news of the kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth for a witness to all the nations; and then the end will come."
Acts 1:8: "but you will receive power when the holy spirit arrives upon you, and you will be witnesses of me both in Jerusalem and in all Ju·de′a and Sa·mar′i·a and to the most distant part of the earth.
Most professed Christians ignore Jesus' command to preach the Kingdom message. They are content to sit on their hands in church and pay some gabby clergyman to do the preaching for them. Still, they consider themselves to be good Christians.
Jehovah's Witnesses are the only ones who comply with Jesus' words on a consistent basis. But for their troubles, they get accused of "salvation by works," which is completely wrong.

Let us see:
Matt. 24:14
Matt 28:19-20
Matt. 10:7
Acts 20:20-21
Acts 5:42
Mark 13:10; 14:9
Romans 10:10 points out "with the heart one exercises faith for righteousness, but with the mouth one makes public declaration." vs. 13 "Everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved." This is where most people stop reading. But the next 2 verses ask interesting questions. "How can they call on Him without putting faith? How can they put faith in whom they have not heard? How can they hear without someone to preach? How can someone preach if they have not been sent forth?
2Cor. 4:1-6 shows the ministry of the good news we are to preach is veiled or hidden by Satan to most of the population. A purpose of preaching is to shine light of truth to remove the veil and let right hearted people know the truth of the good news.
Still think it is "totally out of context"? Rather, ask yourself why you did not know this already? Why were you not told? Who tried to keep you in darkness?

Mark 16:14-16 "Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen. He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned."
It is said in my Bible that the most reliable early manuscripts do NOT contain this passage. Does anyone know more details about this? I wonder if it was in the Dead Sea Scrolls.
edit. Either way, all meanings here are repeated elsewhere. I dearly wish we could just throw out the condemnation part, but even in John 3:18 it says "Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son." (NIV)

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. 17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
Go down to Texas to a rattle snake roundup and enjoy the show.... the fundies like playing the the snakes.
It's not out of context.... sorry.

2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 5 But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

Great Commission of Jesus, recorded in the final verses of the Gospel of Matthew: "Go to all the nations and make disciples. Baptize them and teach them my commands."
The early Christians were noted for their evangelizing.

Mark 16:15-16&20
15And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
16He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
20And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.
And it is Jesus that was talking.
Seems pretty clear to me.

It permeates Paul's writings but he was speaking of attracting people to the faith not hawking it like a product. What you see today with fundies is a very debased version of the idea of Christ's teachings being held up as a beacon.
