Everyone has an accent. The Australians have an accent which was influenced heavily by the Cockney in England. I can understand the Australians, but you might hear things very different in the other countries.
Every country will have different slang and even different behaviour. Even in the same country there will be different vocabulary and accents.

Australians do have an accent but if you learn English in Australia you should have no difficulty speaking with UK English speakers. The American accent is rather stonger (to the British ear) than the Australian accent and they use a number of different forms and words. However, you should still be able to understand them with a little practice.
By the way - I understand you perfectly.

People from Australia, America and the UK should be able to understand each other pretty well.
The Australian accent sounds more like a Cockney accent from the UK. I would describe it more like a cross between a British accent and a Texas accent!
One time, I was riding on the ferry from Oostende, Belgium to Dover, England, where I met two other ladies. I was an American; one was from England and the other was from New Zealand. We had totally different accents as we talked with each other, but we understood each other just fine.

I m a South East Asian and have no problems understanding an American, Aussie or Kiwi speak their own brand of English, most of the time. In a global environment i think it's essential to slow down your pace a little, esp for the average British speaker whom a non-native like me have to pay the most concentration to hear him really well. If you are a British businessman travelling extensively, you will fully understand this. Together with pace, you all should also focus with sufficient volume and clear pitch.

You will be able to communicate with the English, Americans, however are a different story. All Americans think that an English accent is Australian anyway, just shows that they are either deaf or stupid or a little of each, good on yer mate

I particularly like the double question mark. Cos Australians tend to raise their voice at the end of every sentence, making everything they say sound like a question. Other than that, go ahead, learn English in Aus. One thing's for sure, the weather's better! AND, the beer's cold!
