1Corithians 8:5 tells us there are many gods and lords but, the only ones with any real power is Jehovah and Jesus. God does demand exclusive devotion as it is the only thing we can give He does not already possess.
Think of it this way. You create a solar system and home world and everything on it to place humans in charge. The only thing you ask back is acknowledgment of you as Creator and Ruler. Then they thumb their nose at you. Would that not "gripe your grits"?
Still Jehovah has love for humans and did not wipe us all out. For the true enemies of good, He did not allow them to continue. He demonstrated His ability to protect His people as long as they were faithful. Witnessing this, several nations who would have been enemies, stayed on the good side of His people.
Today, we have that example. Jehovah always provide a way out for His people and destruction for His enemies. That He safeguards His people proves He is no Psychopath.

It wasn't just that they were just worshipping these gods- When the Isrealites worshiped these gods, awful things happened.
One example: In worship of Molech(aka Baal), the people would heat up the metal statue. It depicted the god with its arms outstretched and a hollow chamber in its stomach. A fire was lighted in the chamber and allowed to heat the metal arms and hands. After priests sufficiently heated the statue, an infant, usually the first-born of a family, was placed on the burning hands. The flailings of the infant would eventually cause the baby to fall into the fire in the stomach.
Human sacrifice was just one of the many awful practices that the people of that time counted as 'worship'.
No wonder God was so angry with them.
Sure, He wanted their complete devotion.
But he also didn't want them brutally killing their children in order to somehow please these imaginary friends.
Seems to make sense to me.

your basing your image of God on a the bible. Oddly enough that is your first mistake. The bible is a book of stories that teach lessons. I didnt really rain for 40 days and 40 nights. That didnt happen. That does mean God doesnt exist. That only means God isnt really the way we think he is. He doesnt go around interfering with peoples lives or punishing people. He doesnt have to. We pretty much take care of that ourselves. You steal, you go to jail. God didn't punish you society did. The stories in the bible reflect a society long past. Know one knows God and you cant base your image of him on an outdated book of stories. Common sense. Dont believe everything you read in church. You journey with God is a personal one. God teaches us not with a book but through experiences. We learn from our mistakes. Dont judge God based on his followers. They are only human. So are you. So live, learn, and just do the best you can in life. Thats all you can do.

How silly some people are, the 3 main religions all worship the same God. The Almighty to whom ascribing partners is a great sin.

One of the 10 Commandments is "Thou shalt not have any gods except me."
God knew the deceitful, evil ways of mankind and how they would do exactly opposite of what He had commanded but stiff penalties would come upon those who transgressed His Word. Satan had this in heart when He was the first to transgress and rebel against his maker, and so it is that Satan puts it into the heart of mankind to do as he did. And so when people rebel against God Almighty, they do so by worshiping false gods or idols which is forbidden and God holds all accountable unless they come to Christ to be cleansed from this and every known sin to man..

You sound like you believe in such a God.
If you do, then you must live in a lot of fear of how he will treat you in the future. You don't seem to be on the best of terms with this very jealous and arbitrary God.
Lev 26:14-17
14 "'But if you will not listen to me and carry out all these commands, 15 and if you reject my decrees and abhor my laws and fail to carry out all my commands and so violate my covenant, 16 then I will do this to you: I will bring upon you sudden terror, wasting diseases and fever that will destroy your sight and drain away your life. You will plant seed in vain, because your enemies will eat it. 17 I will set my face against you so that you will be defeated by your enemies; those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee even when no one is pursuing you.

Conversations With God by Neale Donald Walsh
This is a very alternative view of the annal depictions of God that are taught in many religions.
Remember the Bibles where originally written by very powerful Men --- Men that had ALL power - even over Kings.

I'm not God, of course, but I think the reason He got mad was because to worship is much more than to play. When you play with an imaginary friend it's not serious....it's play, and when you worship someone who isn't real you are belittling yourself....placing your whole being beneath something that isn't worthy. He made us and He knows our worth. It's probably quite infuriating to Him that we tend to take that so lightly....even insult Him for it. According to Him we don't bow to any being except Him because we are His children and we have dominion.

Actually, if you look at the Bible, it says that "Thou shalt have no other Gods before Me." (an indication that he wanted to be worshipped as the primary God of the Hebrew people) -- This is a tacit admission of the existance of other Gods.
Also, in Psalms 82:1 it says that "The Lord sittest in the congregation of the Mighty, He judgest AMONG the gods".
Again, both of these passages indicate that there are multiple Divinities.....
