I have a borrowed pc while mine is being fixed. This borrowed pc has windows Me which freezes up quite a bit. I would like to upgrade to windows xp. I do not have the program on disc but I was wondering if their was a way I could upgrade online without having to buy the program for a computer that is only a loner. On the side of the computer is a sticker showing the computer is a legal copy and has a validation number on it. I asked the person I am borrowing this from if they had the program disk but they said someone was throwing out the computer and so she decided to see if it worked and it did so no, she has no cd for it. Advice please

No. Windows XP is a program that you have to buy. If the computer is any good (even tho someone was on the verge od tossing it), you might invest in a copy of XP UPGRADE which was going for about $100 but may be cheaper now that Vista is out.

If it's a loner and the loanee doesn't care, that is....

If you can find a Windows ME CD, you might be able to do a repair on the OS. I'm sure Microsoft has quit supporting ME, so there's no upgrades to be had.

I would do a cleanup of TEMP files, a good scandisk, and make sure you have a current anti-virus installed. ME was a semi-glorified version of Win98 and they had a lot problems with AD-WARE, so you might get ad-aware and scan with that.

One more thing to consider is getting an old copy of Win98 and loading it. Some friend of yours that has gone to XP might have an old copy you can load.

Then again you have to realize that you have an OLD COMPUTER and it may have hardware problems.

GOOD luck
