Someone borrowed my car and got into a minor accident. Turns out they have a suspended license :( He told the other driver he would pay for damages, just give him 2 estimates. He didn't get the other drivers info at all (grrr!) .. only gave him info from my insurance card and his cell number. A few days go by and no contact from other driver. Today my insurance company calls me asking for details! :( Now what do I do!? Can this still be settled without the insurance company?? I've never had to deal with insurance companies before so I dont know what to tell them and I want to minimize any trouble I may be in now thanks to friend who borrowed car!

Insurance goes with vehicles, not with drivers. However, if your 'friend' was unlicensed and you let him use your car, your insurance may not cover it. Just report what happened to your insurance and hope they do cover it. Tell them you had no idea he wasn't licensed. It may not make any difference though, depending on what company you have and whether they will want to jump through that loop hole.

If they don't, or if you want to handle it without involving the insurance, the only option is for you to pay out of pocket and hope your friend will pay you back. Don't hold your breath. He's not much of a friend if he would borrow your car knowing he wasn't permitted to drive.

The insurance company is involved because the other driver made a claim. That dog has barked and it can't be corrected.
You may be personally liable because you allowed the unlicensed driver to use the car.
You may have to recover from him.

sorry to say but you got yourself in trouble the instant you let an unlicensed driver operate your vehicle. your insurance will probably have to pay the bill, as it was your insured car but they also have the option to cancel on you and sue you and the operator for the loss they take.... my advice get the money from your friend to make the deal right... immediately, sue them if you have to- they broke your trust and aren't a very good friend if they take chances with your life like that. your insurance company should have contact info from the other person involved and if they see you are paying the bill personally, should be glad to give it to you. good luck and be more careful next time.

Sure, but get something signed regarding payment and accident responsibility, and give him only a short time before actually reporting it, because people sometimes decide to change the story afterward and report it themselves as a hit and run, with a "witness" who got your plate number. In other words, you can choose to work it out amicably, but protect yourself at the same time. Depending on the level of damage, there may still be a police report required, by the way, or the car cannot legally be repaired. In Manitoba, for instance, that level is $1,000. There is always a police report required if someone is injured in an accident.

Give the info to the insurance company... tell them exactly what happened are. It's a total PAIN IN THE BUTT to do it without the insurance companies.

well tell the insurance company that a friend loaned the car and he wrecked it. maybe they will still pay for the damages but your rate will go up

"SOMEONE"...................

IT WILL BE UP TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY BUT I WOULD TELL THEM THAT YOU GAVE THAT SOMEONE YOUR PERMISSION TO DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE.

YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DAMAGES BECAUSE THAT SOMEONE WAS NOT LISTED AS A DRIVER ON YOUR POLICY.
