I was looking to make one of those detonator plunger boxes that they use in cartoons. It's a box that has a handle on top and when you push the the handle all the way down (kind of like a bicycle pump) the TNT, dynamite, or my case fireworks are detonates/ignited.

I do not care if it's legal or not.

Inside the box is an electic generator and some gears to gear-up the rate of pushing the T-handle down. That's about all there is to it (except for wire and binding posts and a wood box). You can use a toy DC motor as a generator -- you can also buy toy gear sets to fit those motors.

Modern "plunger boxes" use a key that twists a rotatry spring coil (like in a wind-up wristwatch). When you release the trigger, the spring tension spins the gears and turns the generator.

Dynamite Detonator

The blasting caps for high explosives require a higher current, thus the generator mechanism described.

If all you want is the 'look' and are dealing only with standard fireworks electric matches, a 9V battery is sufficient to fire those, so the handle could just make contact at the bottom to complete the circuit.

You ought to care if it's legal! ;-)

Which wouldn't be that hard...most states require an electrical control for fireworks take "two positive actions" to send the electricity to the electric match.

So, if you put an 'arming' switch on the box, plus the plunger, it should meet the requirements.

You could screw or fasten the bottom of the pump to a wooden board, and cover that with a box. That way it will stay secure....
