I have (had) shedding problems with our indoor cats. I paid a visit to our local PetSmart and found this really terrific grooming comb that can be used for either cats or dogs. They come in a couple of different sizes and are in the $20-$30 range. I had seen them advertised on TV, but I figured if they were any good they would end up in the stores, so I waited. I saw the store's groomer actually using one on a red lab and I couldn't believe all the hair it was pulling off. What it does is to pull out all the loose hair from the underneath, which is where the shedding occurs. It works SO well. I comb all our little guys once a week, and it's really helped A LOT! I get enough hair of them, that I swear if I had a loom I could knit me a whole other cat!
I also found this little red mitt thing ($6 or $7) that picks up hair off furniture and clothing -- you wipe with the mitt in one direction and it picks up all the hair, and if you wipe the mitt in the other direction it cleans it off.

You need to get the dead hair out. I just groomed my Sheltie yesterday and I think I could have made another dog from all the fur I got out of her. She looks better and feels better. If you can't do it on your own take her to a good groomer. Also see what you're feeding her, a good diet can make a big difference too. I don't know what mix your dog is, but what I love about my Sheltie is they really only shed twice a year. Now my other dog is Irish Wolfhound & Lab and sheds all the time and so I'm always grooming her. Keeping up the grooming really helps too. All the best;^)

A poor diet can cause more shedding. Many popular commercial dog foods like Purina have caused this. Switching to a healthy, more natural food could help. Check out this article on how to choose a healthy pet food:

The best deshedding tool I have found is the Furminator. You can get it from pet stores and online. The same company also makes deshedding shampoos and a supplement that is supposed to help with shedding.

I discovered the joys of the undercoat rake for mine. It is amazing how much dead hair they take off. I've seen advertised something called The Furminator. Very expensive and I've not tried it to see if it works for me. Others claim it is pretty good.
In general, to reduce shedding, the best thing is to brush brush brush. Every day. If you have a type of dog that "blows coat" once or twice a year, outside is the best place to brush. Sometimes it is pretty ungodly.
I have two collies and three heavy shedding mixes and... Wow. I could not live without my undercoat rake.

In all likelihood it is diet related...foods containing corn, wheat, soy can cause flakey skin, excess shedding, ear infections, etc.
Look for a better food for your dog:
Canidae, Wellness, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Innova, Merrick, Solid Gold are some good choices.

okay he is probably loosing his winter coat, in a few months it will not be too bad. try brushing him EVERYDAY. Bathing once a lmonthand ask your vetabout better food. This is one of the main causes of shedding (a poor diet) You may think that pedigree is okay, but it's like junk food to a dog. Try purina pro plan or science diet. (boycott iams!!)

Brush frequently! That will help with shedding. At least, you'll get the hair in one place, not all over the house, etc.

Take him to the vet, maybe it's health problems that are causing him to lose hair. Have some blood tests done.
