Ion engines need sources of high voltage (HV). Tesla coils produce HV, so they could conceivably be used to generate the necessary HV for an ion engine. There are, however, much more efficient ways (in both volume and electrically) to generate HV.
As for the amount of *power* needed to lift 500 pounds... like the guy before me said, all you need is 500.01 pounds of force against 500.00 pounds of weight to lift it. It doesn't matter whether it is a NFL lineman benchpressing 500 pounds with his arms, or a crane with ropes pulleys and an engine, or a rocket ion engine. How FAST you want to lift that weight -- well there's where your power comes in.
Power is energy per time. Energy is force * distance.
If you want to lift your 500 pounds a distance of 60 miles (straight up), then you need 158.5 million foot-pounds of energy. If you want to take 1 hour to get there, then you need 21.5 MegaWatts of power (sustained for 1 hour).

I would think that a series of electromagnets cylindrically stacked and spaced out properly would be the way to do this, like in a rail gun, or a linear accelerator. Going against this idea is that, currently, the weight of such an apparatus is significant.
