Yeah I guess you are so right, NASCAR is not a sport. I guess that is how you explain NASCAR's surge in popularity, NASCAR'S huge T.V.ratings, and NASCAR drivers making your baseball players look like the no-good, pill-popping, non-athletes that they really are! We are all sport fans and we should respect everyones love for their own sport. If you don't like NASCAR fine, but leave the rest of us the hell alone. I respect your sport and would like the same consideration from all other sports.

Do you know the difference between a sport and a game?

You know, it's not often I hear commentators refer to football, basketball or baseball as sports. Most often they are called games and the participants are called players.

An error in a game is a miffed catch, a dropped or intercepted pass, a missed block maybe resulting in a minor injury often not to the one who made the error and very rarely results in death. So rare, the chances of being killed are about the same as hitting the LOTTO.

An error in a sport such as racing can kill you or your best friend in .00001 of a second. Or you can suffer for weeks before dieing and if you survive you may not know your wife and kids. It has happened thousands of times, yet the participants, called racers, strap in, fire those cars up and dare to tempt fate for the love of their sport and for their fans.

Think about that the next time your all-pro quarterback curls up in a fetal position to avoid a little contact.

Death in racing does not even have to happen in an actual race. You can die in practice or testing setups. Maybe simply testing tires. Testing tires is probably the most dangerous.

Tell you what. Tell every baseball player, football, basketball, what ever you please, that during practice, they have a 50/50 chance of surviving and let's see how many of those "athletes" are truly "sportsmen".

Beginning to get the picture?

A sportsman engaged in true sport is willing to bet his life to prove he is the best.

Now, are you good enough to bet your life or do you just want to play games?

well, I am NO fan of Nascar, I think its god awful boring. However, I do have respect for what they do. Sitting in that car in the heat for hours going at greater than 200 mph and keeping your attention focused all that time on what your are doing isnt something an ordinary person can do.
Does that mean I want to watch it? Heck no. But I doubt that I could do it. I dont think I could race that long playing a video game eating pizza rolls and drinking beer!

What makes anything a sport? All a sport is, is an activity involving some physical exertion which is governed by a set of rules and which is engaged in competitively.

So lets go through this one term at a time:
Physical exertion, racing definately involves that. it's not easy to fight a steering wheel traveling at 200+MPH, not to mention the split second reaction times of hitting the gas/break/clutch when needed.

Governed by a set of rules, every major auto racing series has a set of rules, there's no denying that.

Engaged in competitively, turn on your TV any given sunday afternoon and you'll see racing being engaged in quite competitively. Wheather it's NASCAR or F1 or whatever, those drivers are out there to win.

So there you go, three-for-three, auto racing is a sport, topic can be closed.

Do you have any idea how stressful it is?

The average temperature of a race car is 130-140 degrees depending on the vent. Plus the driver is in a very hot suit.

It is very tiring out there. You have to make quick judgements and act fast.

Motorsport has always been a sport, Football, basketball, and baseball are all kids games that have evolved. I would say soccer, but who plays that past 12 years old?

And how is hitting a ball with a stick considered a sport.

Thats like saying baseball is just throwing, catching, and hitting a ball. There is underlying strategy to both. There is much knowledge and skill required. If it were easy then everyone would cross the finishline at the same time.

So competitive typewriting is a sport then... it requires physical exertion and is governed by rules. so is hot dog eating and other "sports" ... these kind of definitions are BS defintions because if I were to say competitive typing is a sport, then that is **** because we all know that it is not. Since this defintion is not valid, you can't use it to say nascar is a sport.
