My work place has places set aside outdoors for both smokers and non-smokers; they both have benches and are shaded from the elements. Unfortunately, they weren't smart about the respective locations, because the non-smokers are upwind! Worse, the smokers congregate directly in front of the doors, making it next to impossible for a non-smoker to enter without having to hold his/her breath while running the gauntlet of second-hand smoke!
One time, I politely asked the smokers to move away from the doors, but you'd think that I asked them to jump off a cliff, judging by their reaction . . . or, should I say, lack of it (they glowered at me, but didn't do anything).
I then complained to upper echelons, but nothing came of it.
I put signs on the doors which read, "PLEASE DO NOT BLOCK DOORWAY" (notice that it doesn't mention smokers), but, apparently, smokers can't read! ;)
I don't *have* to use that entrance, but, unfortunately, it's the most convenient. Considering that there is plenty of space all around the entrance, it astonishes me that anyone would want to hang around so close to it!
Regardless, we live in a society where people tend to react violently to the smallest provocation (I belong to many blog sites, and you would not believe peoples' misinterpretations and subsequent reactions to the least offensive things that are said!). When was the last time you asked someone to turn down their car stereo, and lived to tell about it?
I presume that you are speaking in general terms, but, equally generally speaking, everyone should deal with it as best you can. If you're a smoker, would it kill you to move? If you're a non-smoker, can you find another way around? (BTW, this actually happened today: As I parked my car, I saw two co-workers walking around the building, which many of us do when we need a break; one of them held a coffee cup in one hand, a cigarette dangled in her mouth, and a lighter in her other hand. Did she think that by walking she'd offset the effects of the cigarette? Or the caffeine, for that matter?) ;)
P.S. The word is "breathE". Please don't beat me up! ;)

Wow, this is serious. For one thing, there will ALWAYS be idiots in the world, what they say or do is none of your business. It's THEIR life. Yeah, people do weird stuff all the time. God says 'Judge NOT or YOU will be judged'. He said that for a reason. For you to think that they are ALL directing their laughing at you, is odd. Two reasons come to mind, ONE you are STARING at them. I think this one is the most logical. People don't like to be stared at. It's rude, it's condescending and it's strange. TWO you are IMAGINING that this is occuring. Your brain is telling you this, but it's not really happening. So, you need to either stop staring at people and judging them OR you need to seek mental health assistance. If you are school age, talk to your parents. If you can't talk to your parents confide in your school counselor. Print these responses and tell them it is YOU writing. You definitely need some help hon. PS When my dad used to drive me to school, I had him drop me off at the back entrance. Kids will ALWAYS tease the kid who is dropped off by mom/dad. It's the ritual, so find ways around it. You should seldom be seen w/mom or dad if you can help it.

I hate it. Living in NY, when you are walking behind a smoker you are pretty much stuck b/c trying to get around them would involve bumping around several other fast walking people. It's just gross.
I know people have the right to it, but ugh, I wish they wouldn't smoke unless they were standing still somewhere.

If you don't like getting smoke in your hair or on your clothes then stay away from people tht smoke. Use a bit of common sense. Also do not walk behind someone that smokes. Walk infront of them or wait till they move on. Smoking outside is legal. So if you don't like it stay away from it.

i hate it. i also hate when you go somewhere to eat and they ask if you want smoking or nonsmoking and even if you go to the nonsmoking section you can still smell the smoke..... its like a peeing section in a pool, it doesnt work becasue it eventually blends into everything.
