I don't think God is in the business of punishment,
but Nature is. Like, if you have unsafe sex, you can get a disease. If you eat too much and get obese, you make yourself sick. If you hurt people, you really suffer from unhappiness inside, and the natural human law of what goes around comes around does dole out some punishment if we go around hurting others all the time.
I imagine God as too busy healing, sending help, and making art and music to worry about punishment.

'the wages of sin are death' is still true. After Jesus died for our sins, ie in our place, he was the one who died (although being sinless death could not hold him, that's the triumph of the cross), so we don't have to die (the lake of fire, hell, is the second death, a spiritual torment, after our physical death). The punishment is just, because God is a just God. His invitation to eternal life is always open.

First, you need to understand what "sin" really is.

When we sin, it is actually rebellion against God's rightful authority in our lives, tantamount to high treason, in which we place ourselves on the throne, just like satan said he would do back in Isaiah.

So, when you understand just how deadly sin really is, then you can understand why sin can't go unpunished.

But because of God's great love for us, Jesus came to voluntarily die for our sins. He paid the price, made the ultimate sacrifice, and opened the way for us to reach God.

So, yes - God still punishes people for their sins, but if we put our trust in Jesus, and acknowledge and turn away from our sins, then he can forgive us, cleanse us, and give us a new heart.

Generally, God's slacked off a bit. Not too much stoning of adulterers anymore, Him trying to change with the times.

40 day floods? Fire and brimstone wiping out cities in California (sorry...was trying to make funny).

with holding His blessings...now this one I do believe is still going on.

with hold His gift of eternal life...well...if I don't accept it, what happens when I cross over is not going to be His punishing me, but my getting what I wanted...eternal seperation from His love.

God is never changing. One thing we must realize is that if we sin, we must pay for our crimes. Just as a criminal can run for a while, but still get caught, so you can run from God, but eventually He will get you. You can run, but you cannot hide. For example: homosexuals in the book of leviticus are sentence to death for their crimes. In romans 1, they are said to receive a penalty for their crimes. This penalty is AIDS, which used to be called GRID(Gay Related Immune Deficiency). Don't believe me, look it up on wikipedia...
