You should turn this person in to the humane society right away. Cutting off tails causes for lack of balance. The tail is part of the spinal cord. If cats didn't need tails, they would have evolved away long ago. This person needs to be relinquished of her duties as a pet owner. Don't hesitate!!

I don't know about cutting them off, but I live out in the country, and there are tons of feral cats out here, a lot of times people will feed them, so they hang about their trailers, and in the winter they climb up in the engines of cars to get warm, in the morning when someone starts the car the cat gets it's tail chopped off, I mean everywhere I look I see cats with half a tail. Your grandpa sounds like a very cruel person indeed.

I don't agree with cutting kittens tails but I think it's cute when they're born like that.

i ve never seen this happen thankfully. it is illegal to dock dogs tails here in ireland only for working dogs that may injur their tail.. it is terrible that people do that. i suppose in a way they think they re doing the cat good but the tail is important for balance and climbing

I think it's cruel too. But I don't think as many people do it as they used to - you just don't see as many cats with shortened tails as you used to. I have no idea why they did it either.

yes it is cruel. But some people think that this will help the kitten when they grow up but it really doesn't do anything but cause pain.

Yes that is definitely cruelty to animals at that age. She needs to be definitely re-informed that this needs to be done within 1 week of birth.
