I need a name to describe a youth sunday school class on Sunday morning. It will begin at 9:00 with breakfast each week (including coffee). At 9:25 we will split into small groups and have small group/instruction time. That will rap up around 10:15-10:25. At that time students can hang out, talk, play Nintendo Wii, ping pong, air hockey, etc., until about 10:50. At that time students will be kicked out of the youth ministry house and encouraged to attend morning worship. What's a trendy, modern, catchy name that we could use? Our Wednesday nights are called SYNERGY - Where Faith and Life Become One

Trendy names won't make the kids want to come to your Sunday School class. Neither will Wii, ping pong, air hockey or donuts.

I taught youth Sunday school for four years before we moved. When I started the class, I had 12 sixth-graders and four seventh-graders who were only there because their parents made them go. Before me, there was a new teacher every 5 months because the people all tried to be trendy and FUN!!!!!!! and ended up being condescending. Kids can smell that a mile away. I can't tell you how many people tried to tell me that teaching this class would be hell.

I actually TAUGHT the Bible. I let them ask questions -- I encouraged the really tough questions by telling them the stuff I used to wonder about. I gave the Biblical approaches to dealing with conflict, low self-esteem, the stupidity of busywork they were given at school, the desire to fit in, the pressure to be sexually active, the weird communication gaps between them and their parents. I didn't feed them unless it was a special occasion. I certainly didn't expect ping pong and video games to be a good preparation for worship! I treated them like the young adults they wanted to be and were expected to become. I taught them what worship is and how to participate in it (why do people expect to just throw teens into worship without any preparation?). I taught them what prayer is and why they feel like their prayers are never answered. I taught them how to use the Bible (something else that people just throw kids into, like it's not complex and potentially confusing). I taught them how to love Jesus by following His example.

Within a month, I had 30 kids. By the end of the second semester, I was averaging 65 kids and they had to move me to a bigger classroom in the church. When I left, I cried, they cried, their parents cried. Not because there wasn't anybody to take my place -- any person who loves teens can teach them with respect. We were all just sorry to see a good run end.

My class was called "Sunday School." It doesn't matter what you NAME it. The only thing that matters is how much respect you show the kids by giving them the real information they really need.

And please, please, PLEASE ditch the video games and stuff before worship. That's just wrong on so many levels.

There is a thinking in most denominations that apologetics is going against faith. But defending the faith is a requirement according to 1 Peter 3:15.
