I have a a sprig of shamrock that someone gave me last St Patrick's day and it is thriving! it is 6 inches high and needs re potting. I also have some kind of cactus that I rescued from a shared house that I lived in 15 years ago. It was close to death but when I moved out I took it with me and it flowered for the second time in June, Beautiful peachy pink flowers. Don't know what it is but, I have empathy with it (If you can with a plant) as it had been abandoned too, As I had too at that time.

In San Diego, California I grew the following:
Strawberries. Taste was OK, about the same as the ones from the store, and the snails got lots of them.
Apples. Taste was OK, about the same as the ones from the store.
Tangerines. Tasted REALLY good, much better than the ones from the store. And no pests at all! You need the right climate and Southern California had what the Satsuma Mandarin Orange (AKA tangerine) wanted.
In Austin, Texas I grew the following:
Tomatoes. Tasted REALLY REALLY good. They just blew the store tomatoes out of the water! But the tomato worms got all but 2 of them. But boy were those 2 GOOD!
Persimmons. My daughter really likes them. The birds really like them too, but a net over the tree works pretty well. They taste slightly better than the ones in the store, if you can find them in at the store. They are not the most common fruit.

Ive grown
Potatoes, Lettuces, Radishes, Squash, Cucumbers, Tomatoes, Runner beans, Corn on the cobs, garlic, Onions, Herbs,
Well all sorts really, but this year a lot of my home grown food has been a disaster due to the wet weather. It is quite soul destroying the amount of damage caused in our country.

Lettuce is a crop for experts, not novices. It requires perfect weather, soil, no bugs. For the average gardener, tomatoes are always an easy safe starting place. They just need to be soaked every day and lots of sun. I've grown tomatoes, beans, peas, carrots, corn, squash, okra (difficult), pumpkins, flowers, and houseplants. Although, nothing I grown indoors lasts. Unfortunately my green thumb is only magical outdoors. I have had a couple completely organic gardens. I had to go out early in the morning to pick off snails and morning bugs, had to go get lady bugs from the field and bring them to my garden, and pick beetles and stuff off in the afternoon, did my own weeding etc. It was fun.

As an 8 year old...that's 45 years ago, I grew some wonderful radishes in a corner of my Mother vegetable garden.
I was absolutely astonished at the transformation from seed to juicy, peppery radish!
I am a singularly successful gardener because I have never planted anything since.

I know this is shocking but once I grew my hair out of my own head but sadly after 25 years of my life its sadly going now.
But don't worry because the sun reflects of my head and back in to space so I'm doing my bit for the environment.

You have to grow lettuce in cool weather. Did you do that? Maybe you did.
I'm not such a green thumb, myself.
