A Cocker Spaniel is a good choice but I would suggest getting a male as females tend to be more territorial. They would be great with kids, they love to play ball, and stick right to your feet, very loyal, love people, and easy to train. I have had 5 Cocker Spaniels, none of them have given me any kind of trouble. Also a Yorkshire Terrier would be a good choice. They are energetic, adventerous, and are best suited for older children, they too are easy to train. A Pug, they are a good choice. They have tons of personality, great family dog, patient/good natured, and are very tolerant of children. There is also a Pomeranians they can be a little yappy but if you correct it as a puppy they will make great compainions too. Very eager to learn, intellegent, and very loyal to their family. This breed is tended for older, well-mannered children. If the children bother them alot they tend to become nervous and may snap. That is all I can really think of right now...Hope this helps!! Goodluck! :D

Shi Tzu's are the best. They are very loving and loyal. I have one and she acts like one of my children. She is so smart and acts like she knows what I am saying. Not a good yard dog though. Definitely an indoor dog. And mine loves to sleep in the bed with me. She has to have her own pillow. So cute! Get one at 6-8 weeks old. They are the CUTEST puppies. Very playful. And my Shi Tzu only barks when someone drives up or knocks on the door.

I agree with angel. Boston Terriers only bark to alert, shed very little, and don't have too much of a doggy smell. They are also small, playful, and good with children.

Pugs are not good dogs in heat, they are prone to heat stroke because of their pushed in faces - it's hard for them to cool themselves. I'm assuming you meant heat like climate not like unfixed dogs. They are great with family and funny clowns but shed a lot. I once heard that if you get a pug, you should get one to match your furniture.

I have a miniature schnauzer puppy. She doesn't shed, is very smart (easy to pottytrain), and loves people and kisses. She doesn't really like other dogs and barks at everything from people to chip bags. She doesn't bark when left alone though - I checked with my neighbor.

With any puppy, be sure to get a book on raising puppies...I recommend a booklet called Super Puppy. This is the time to correct any issues you would deal with later in their life. Be sure to socialize the puppy with all kinds of people, animals, and places.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Sweet small spaniel breed, easy to train, does not bark much and good with kids. Would love to sleep with you. Definitely not a guard dog. Very cute.

I reccomend the breed selector on the animal planet website for anyone thinking about adopting a dog. It matches you with the breeds that fit your lifestyle based on criteria like energy level, amount of grooming required, protection desired, ect. It's a great tool and I used it before adopting my two pit bulls...needless to say, they are the perfect dogs for me. Give it a try and see what it matches you with and choose form there.

On another note....no dog is "okay in heat". Please be a responsible dog owner and spay/neuter your dog....and ALWAYS adopt from your local shelters. Do not support backyard breeders.

Yorkie

We have one and she is a great dog. Plus it meets all of your requirements. We read that they don't like a lot of noise and rough play but that is completely untrue. Ours loves kids and gets excited when new people come over. It all depends on how you raise them.

The only problem is that they can be difficult to housebreak. Other than that you shouldn't have any problems. Ours only barks a little bit and it is usually only when we are playing or when she is telling us she needs to go to the bathroom.

My suggestion is to adopt one from your local animal shelter or rescue. Most any dog, over time, will adapt to your environment. As for being good with kids, yapping, etc, that's more of a result of how you raise and train your dog rather than the breed.

Good luck!

Spaniels are not good with kids..

okay in heat?? what the heck does that mean?? all unfixed dogs go into heat.. there is NO REASON to keep a pet dog unfixed (more health problems when they are not spayed) unless the dog is a purebred registered dog and you intend to show it.. then get it fixed!

the best breed with kids is the Golden Retreiver.

small dogs tend to be yappier than big ones..

non-shedding dogs require regular trips to the groomer - a pug or Shih Tzu might be best..

Look for a beagle/terrier mix. Thats what I have and he loves people and other dogs a lot. Smaller in size and pretty easy to train. I taugh mine how to sit, shake, and lay in one weekend. He sleeps with me now that he is fully housetrained. And lastly everywhere we go he is known as "the cutest dog ever".
