As Shakespeare once said, a serpent can often look like an innocent flower on the outside, but beware of the poison you cannot see.
I think it means to approach life cautiously.

Life is not life without the ups and downs. Sometimes you think everything is going your way, that life is good to you, you're getting all that you want but then as everything is just perfect, something unexpected would be lurking around the corner to ruin it. Just like a serpent, that's really pretty, elegant and beautiful. But you'll be surprised at what horrors it can do with just a bite.

personally I don't like snakes, so to compare life to one, doesn't sit well with me. The quote gives me the creeps.
