Real poverty degrades people and often forces them to do desperate things. That's why the Bible writer of Proverbs 30:7-9 said, 'Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, 'Who is the Lord?' Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonour the name of my God.' That's why Jesus said we should ask God for our DAILY bread.

Another problem is explained in Ecclesiastes 8:11: 'When the sentence for a crime is not quickly carried out, the hearts of the people are filled with schemes to do wrong.' Justice speedily carried out, is a great bulwark against growing evil. But when the wheels grind almost to a standstill and the judiciary is biased or corrupt, evil escalates.

Perhaps the apostle Paul pointed to our individual responsibilitites by saying, 'I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength.' (Philippians 4:11-13) Godly contentment is a spiritual gift given to those who have learned to be busy waiting on the Lord, in faith and obedience, doing those good works God has appointed for them to do - for his glory and the benefit of others, not themselves.

I'd blame apathy. I can see the world going to **** from the comfort of my living room. The only moment I'll start moving is when the bombs start going off outside my front door.

This is the rule of our society; act first, think later after we've started suffering the consequences of badly thought actions. Then do something about it at the last possible moment. It's happening right now with the climate, our youth, and our governments. We're all just too lazy to do anything about it, and oddly, it seems as though we're being encouraged not to take responsibility for anything. No one cares though, and no one will till it's too late.

Post war socialism, in attempting to help the poor has, instead of solving the problem of poverty, worsened it. Welfare has been structured in a way that has encourages the poor to reproduce notwithstanding they do not have the resources to support themselves, never mind their offspring.
While the welfare accelerator has disproportionately expanded the proportion of poor people in this country the problem has been exacerbated by the destruction of the UK education system in the sixties. Selective schools provided children from poor background with the opportunity to obtain a good education based on merit. Now the only routes to good education are property in expensive areas or private school. Both of these are obviously beyond the reach of low income families, irrespective of their children's academic potential.

A victim mentality seems to prevail - is something goes wrong in people's lives they seem to want to blame someone else instead of getting on with life. I really believe that in many cases, the parents fail their children. When I look back at my youth (I am 41) my parents (dad and step mum) encouraged me, guided me and invested time and effort into bringing me up to be a well balanced and confident adult with a will to succeed in life - I have to add that I had a very difficult childhood and was bought up in absolute poverty so I am afraid the poverty excuse does not wash with me at all. Investing time in children, listening to them, teaching them to be independent and responsible for their actions, confident etc is something that money can't buy - but good parents can give.

I don't know who Roy Hattersley is, but I think he's got the problem turned inside out. The real "root cause" is greed.
It is not poor people who are causing the trouble. I'd think, rather, that it is the greedy who cause the poverty...

its with out a doubt its since promiscuity in the 60 and the lack of family values and morals, with kids having kids and the lack of family structure, there is no mannors any more, now if the adult don't install then how will the children learn, the thing is where i live it the eldery are the worst culprits, it only begs to wonder what there children are like????

we dont talk to one another; we live behind locked doors and 6 foot high fences...

whats wrong, well it is poverty, but its a social poverty. its not the lack of welath, but the apparent opulence and disparity between the haves and the have nots.

but in this age of social wlefare we no longer have those who have nothing..just those who want more and expect to get it.

What, poverty is the cause of society's problems?? I think it is the other way around. Poverty is the RESULT of society's problems. We have a society that reveres the almighty dollar and people think if they have lots of them, they aren't obligated to help their fellow man. And I have no stomach for the self-righteous snobs who tell a starving man they will "pray for him" instead of putting food in his stomach. Thinking you are too good to get your hands dirty actually helping the poor makes me sick.
