I've never driven to Santa Monica, but I have driven to the west coast. By myself, I made it in four days with little stopping and no side trips. (I actually think that I could have done it in three, but I drove in the winter through a lot of bad weather.) Driving with a family member who wanted to stop about every hour and eat out and stop at every farmers market and... Well, it took five days but felt even longer.
I have included Mapquest directions for you. I don't know which county you are leaving from, so the time may be more or less depending on how close you are to a major route.

Edit: To fly there? Around 4 to 6 hours if it's a direct flight. If it has one or more stops... Who knows? Some of the stops can take forever.

Constantly driving and pushing the speed limits, you could probably make it in 60 to 90 hours maximum. I drove from L.A. to Dallas in the daylight hours of one day, even experiencing a flat tire.
But going to Richmond when I was a kid with my family in a Cadillac, it took at least five days, if I remember correctly.
