Who manufactured it is depends on the "nationality" of the firearm. Many countries used a small crown over various things on the weapon, sometimes it was a crest, code or abbreviation for manufacturer, or could be an inspection stamp with BFS being the final inspector. The last is very common on English military firearms; if the caliber specific to a country/area that will help-.303 would be English or a former English colony and 8mm Mauser would be German or East European most likely. I really depends a great deal on where the mark is on the rifle. The best bet is to figure out the model number/nationality of the rifle and then do a web search for one of the many collectors groups and they can give you the information you need and will probably give you an approximate value.

Take it to a big gun show, with some dealers that handle antique guns. You may be looking at "Maastricht", with crowns for the kingom of the Netherlands and maybe "W" for Wilhelmina.

Can you describe it better? Type of action: bolt, lever. If a bolt, is the bolt handle strait or does it curve down? Do you know the caliber? If it is a military rifle, the bolt, barrel and reciever will all have serial numbers. Do they match? Condition of the stock?
