There are a number of lines of evidence that show that the universe is about 13.7 billion years old. This is a fairly recent discovery because the measurements themselves are fairly recent. Until a few years ago, we know the universe was between 10 and 20 billion years old, but had difficulty pinning the age down.

So, how do we know the age? First by looking at the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation. This is the 'afterglow' of the Big Bang and has a lot of information about how dense the universe is, how galaxies were formed, how the universe has changed over time, etc. In particular, it is possible to use it to find an estimate of the age of the universe. Also, by measuring supernovas in distant galaxies, it is possible to get estimates of how fast the universe is and has been expanding. Knowing this and how large the universe is now allows us to figureout when it started. These are two very different ways to measure the age of the universe and they agree.

No, you dont get to just say that the universe is 200 billion years old! You have to actually get some measurements and do some calculations based on other known results to be able to say how old it is. Unlike religion, science doesn't simply pull numbers out of its hat and never test them again.

The universe is expanding, correct. The rest is trash. We can look at the rate of expansion and determine approx.13 1/2 billion years ago the universe began. We know this because the further out we look, the younger the galaxies appear. No scientist has come to the conclusion that the universe is infinite. You could say you think the universe is 200 billion years old. That would mean you would have to explain where the universe was for 186.5 billion years, because we sure can't see any evidence past 14 billion light years or so.Please,I think you actually want truth.I really do,but you can't wrap your head around science.God should stand up to truth, surely?Investigate, read, study, not the creationist crap who only can try to point out absent evidence of the big bang,as they have no testable model to present themselves.Look into the REAL science. The universe is in fact more amazing than your religion will comprehend. There is awesome stuff out there.Check it out.Do you want TRUTH?Or DOGMA?The universe awaits those willing to explore it

The general tone of your question seems to be accusing Atheists of not being able to answer some questions and trying to skirt an issue. Right? So what? There is not always a known scientific answer to everything at this time. All this means is the answer hasn't been discovered yet. The Christian answer when they don't understand something is "god moves in mysterious ways." Well, guess what..."science moves in mysterious ways" too. And it's very possible that science will never know the answer to many things. So if we may never know the answer some diety made it all happen? You expect us to believe that? One thing we Atheists are certain of...no god of any sort exists anywhere. No science needed to understand that. Just a logical, thinking human being. Still amazes me that any intelligent person would believe in a god.

nice rant.

couple of things tho....

1. If a person can't spell or use spell check, then they need to be corrected. Sorry if that offends you, but often spelling is a key to how someone approaches life. Sloppy spelling usually means sloppy other things - including faith practices.

2. I see FAR MORE Christians maligning other posters than any other group on YA. Get off your high horse.

3. The Atheists I have encountered here on YA have not offered made up stories. They offer their perspective - you offer yours. Why do you need to find a way to accuse someone of being a liar?

No one is saying that Evolution is an exact science. I think most of us understand that Evolution is a THEORY. It just so happens that the Theory of Evolution has much more physical proof than the Theory of Creation.

Most of us are always reviewing and revamping what we believe - most of us are open to new possibilities. Most of us meaning the non-Christians that frequent YA.

The next time you want to start pointing fingers in a rant, I hope you remember that it only makes you look like a fool.

EDIT: and not to be mean, but if you are a nurse, you might want to consider your writing of even questions here on YA as something you should want to be easily understood. if your chart notes are anything like your YA questions, you may have a problem.

First I don't know of a current theory that still has the Universe as being infinite. The greater body with many universes, maybe. But not this one.

Second if you extrapolate it back the Universe comes in at about 15 billion years old.

Third Astrophysicists would have a f***n' boring job if they had it all figured out. So of course their are things that they don't know.

But once again, it is OK not to know. And not knowing provides no evidence for any god, just like not knowing about germs wasn't evidence for demonic possession like they though in the middle ages. Evidence for a god is evidence for a god. It is not that we don't know something.

Generally, those three things that you have pointed are used when a question is so horribly marred that it is incomprehensible, or that its premise is laughable or overly confrontational to begin with. For instance, the way that you argue about the universe being infinite seems confrontational to me (especially the part about the pipe). But, to give you an answer, is that the universe is generally referred to as infinite due to the fact that it is expanding (proven by the fact that the distance light from a star has to travel from one galaxy to another galaxy generally has increased over billions of years).

Oh there is much that I don't know. Manly enough for you? I don't smoke so don't have a pipe but I certainly agree that I don't know everything. Only the faithful claim that they know everything about how the universe was created. And the universe could indeed be infinite. We don't know but we do know infinity exists don't we. If you don't think this is true then tell me, where does a circle begin and where does it end? Peace to you as well.

I answered you. I did not point out typing errors, nor did I insult you, but you do have to read my answer.

The Big Bang happened, so the universe is not infinite in time. We can observe the Big Bang today, as the speed of light means the farther away we look, the farther back in time we are looking. The cosmic background radiation IS the Big Bang.

Olber's paradox makes a universe infinite in space and time impossible.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olbers'_paradox

By measuring how fast the distant galaxies are receding from us, then running it backward in time, we can calculate how long ago the Big Bang occurred. It was about 15 billion years ago.

Man does not know everything. The idea that scientists can definitely figure out how old the universe is, or definitely figure out it's origins, is just plain silly.
However, believing everything in the Bible and thinking you know the origins of the universe because you read it in some old book that's been mistranslated over the centuries, that's just silly too.

The truth is, there's no way for anyone to know the origins of the universe for certain, whether they're a theist or not, and anyone who CLAIMS to know simply THINKS they know. That's called faith; there's nothing wrong with having faith in the Bible and what it says, but it's wrong for people who have faith to try and pass off their hunches as facts.

because no one ever understands what your saying. half the time your points are so bizzare that no one can take you seriously. you ask questions like, if A then why X when A and X have absolutely no relation. there is no point to ur questions.

its obviously u dont know much about science when most of ur questions dont even go near the truth of the science teaching. u go by what ur pastor tells u im sure.

in order for u to get real answers, u must ask real questions.

like in this quesiton for example. you ask about how old it is and then claim the universe is infinate. time and space are DIFFERENT. you can have infinate time and limited space. and please provide some evidence with where the scientists are coming to any conclusion. it sounds to us that ur pulling information out of your hat.

instead of asking questions here with absolutely no background knowledge of what ur asking, do a tad bit of reading in a science book and come back. perhaps u will see how stupid ur questions sound to the rest of us.
