shin splints - you can look it up on Google for the gory details. Basically what's happening is that the muscles in your calves are tightening up and pulling on the tendons which attach to your shin bones.

couple things that help -

Get good running shoes that are appropriate for your gait - get them fit by an expert. Once you have the right shoe, just go back and repurchase the exact same shoe.

Stretch before and after running. There is a gizmo you can buy for stretching your calves - see link. $ well spent.

Ice your shins using a bag of frozen vegetables (peas or corn work well).

You probably have shin splints. There is just about nothing you can do for them except wrap them and maybe not use them so much. You typically get them after running a lot, I got them during track, I know, they're awful! They go away after awhile, I just rested them so you may want to try not running for a little while.

If you are running on a hard surface like the roadside or sidewalks, you are beginning to develop shin splints. Make sure you have good running shoes and try and find an indoor track or outside dirt or gravel path to run on and make sure you stretch well before and after.

Shin splits. Usually a good way to get rid of them is to have a friend push down on your feet while you push up. I had a friend who frequently got them. Turns out he had fliud in his shins. He was out of the season for a while.
