America has never had a lot of respect for it's own culture. We've always been subtley or overtly envious of the long cultural history of Europe, and either fiercely proud of our differences from them in compensation, or just cynically dismissive of anything our own culture has to offer. At the moment, the pendulum is back on the self-loathing side, after a brief and uncharacteristic jump towards reflexive patriotism in the year or two after 9/11.

American culture is actually rich and complex, a fusion of the values of the American Revolution, with the diverse backgrounds of immigrants from around the world (the classic 'melting pot' model). There's also a very powerful 'counter culture' in America, which variously seeks to reform, deconstruct, or just plain hate, loath and destroy the culture of the mainstream.

And, of course, there are numerous 'sub cultures' based around all sorts of things - ethnicities, hobbies, regions, lifestyles, etc...

Finally, there is, as you point out, the superficial 'pop culture' of the American media.

The opportunity to get what you want if you work hard, being free to go and come as you please, Pride of being an American, Apple pie, Major League Baseball, the Superbowl, Hollywood and Hot Dogs. Oh ..... and a green lawn.
You should embrace it because where you come from you don't have any of the things mentioned above and you came here because this is the best Country in the World and you know this.

I think one of our greatest "American Values" is work ethic... pretty much since the beginning of our history this country has had an attitude that if you work hard you can accomplish anything... the problem that if have with a lot of immigrants that I have met is that they don't want to work hard and earn a better life here in the U.S.; they just want to leech off the rest of us, living on welfare, having their children get educated, free health-care and not paying taxes...

Your attitude is why so many Americans are against immigration; you expect to come into our country, live off our economy and goodwill and expect us to learn your language and change our way of life to better suit you... what if I went to Mexico and demanded that their laws be changed so that I can get away with illegally crossing the boarder and not paying taxes... American Culture, whatever exactly it is, may have it's down-sides (like obsession with Hollywood) but it has got this country pretty darn far... and besides, if you don't like American Culture, you can always go back to where ever you came from...

Wow, how long have you lived in the US that you think our culture is Hollywood, a burger joint and football? That's a sad statement...

If you want Americans to welcome you and embrace you then you have to put some effort into it.

You can embrace American culture or snub your nose at it I could care less, how you choose your life is your business... Personally I like friends and acquaintances and I want to know about the people, the culture and the history of a country in which I plan to live.

Like I have stated before- American culture:
This country was created by men and women who gave up everything they knew to come to WILD land to escape the tyranny of an oppressive British monarchy.
They fought a bloody war and wrote the Constitution of the United States of America creating a nation that recognized inalienable freedoms and responsibilities.
This country created the automobile and the airplane- the cotton gin- the telephone- electricity.
The greatest minds of the modern world have claimed America as their home.
The American culture is as diverse as the landscape within this great nations borders- here in my neck of the woods you'd say American culture was :
raising cattle,homegrown vegetables
cornbread, pinto beans
jeans and cowboy boots
church on Sunday and Wednesday
40 hr work weeks on the job and 40 hours at the homestead
Please and Thank you- Ma am and Sir
The word Y'all and such endearments as : honey- sweetie spoken in every sentence
But in other parts of this country its:
beer and Brats and parkas
Bikini's and Speedos and surfboards
American culture is what it is because of it's many influences through the varied peoples that have joined in our anthem and made America home.

The American way of life is an expression that refers to the "life style" of people living in the United States of America. It is an example of a behavioral modality, developed from the 17th century until today. It refers to a nationalist ethos that purports to adhere to principles of "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

I could be rude and say things about other countries but I am better than that. You are only describing a small group of Americans. I am sure there are plenty of immigrants that love the Hollywood life, fast food and sports.

America is a place of diverse cultures. Not just one culture. The fact that we are American is what gives us a common bond. I think it is a lot easier to grasp the culture of other places around the world then it is to grasp the cultures in a diverse America. It is easier to grasp the culture of places around the world because those cultures are not as diverse as they are in America. There is no other place in the world that has more cultures in one place. From your comments it seems that you have not grasped the different cultures of America. Maybe this is because you are ignorant enough to believe your culture is the best or you simply don't get out much. Either way, sounds like you should get the F out!

For better or worse we are what we are, and if immigrants do not want to be apart of the English speaking culture, and think that where they came from has a more suitable to their taste, perhaps they are better off staying and enjoying and suffering from where they came from. I think a lot of Americans are tired of being a cash cow for those that disdain out culture, while availing themselves all we have to ofter

America is Jazz, Hip-hop, R&B, Apple Pie, American Sports, Hollywood, MLK, JFK, Reagan, Soul Food, and of course speaking American English..

You need to get in where you fit in. Coming to ones country to only suck thier resources is nothing but a parasite to many.
